The climate crisis represents the greatest threat to our planet, with rising global temperatures and extreme weather patterns providing concrete evidence of its escalating impact worldwide. This crisis significantly affects the ocean, a big aspect that is crucial for maintaining ecosystem balance and sustaining life on Earth. As an archipelagic nation with a maritime area comprising two-thirds of its territory, Indonesia must implement decisive measures to address the climate crisis. In honor of World Oceans Day on June 8, several collaborative initiatives can be undertaken to combat climate change. According to a report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), global sea levels rose by 0.2 meters between 1901 and 2018. Projections indicate this rise could reach between 0.44 and 0.76 meters by 2100. Rising sea levels pose a significant threat to human life, with the potential to cause profound social and economic disruptions. These impacts include alterations to coastlines, increased flooding in coastal regions, and the submergence of small islands. Therefore, we need to start reducing plastic waste. Utari Octavianty, the Co-Founder and Chief Sustainability Officer of Aruna, stated, "Aruna recognizes the government's commitment to reducing ocean plastic waste by 70% by 2025. Achieving this goal requires active community support, particularly in reducing the use of single-use plastics. Aruna is advocating for this cause by empowering coastal communities." Restoring marine ecosystems can be another way. Efforts to restore marine ecosystems include mangrove replanting, coral reef restoration, and seagrass protection. These initiatives aim to enhance ocean health and increase carbon sequestration capacity. The Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) has set a target for Indonesia to have marine conservation areas covering at least 30% of its total marine area by 2025. On a daily basis, opting for sustainably sourced fishery products ensures that fishing practices are environmentally responsible is another of paramount importance. "It is crucial to ensure our seafood choices come from sources that prioritize sustainability. This involves using eco-friendly fishing gear, limiting catches, and protecting essential fish habitats," said Utari. Utari added, "Our dedication is reflected in Aruna's Sustainability Report, in which our achievements and commitment to maintaining fishery sustainability is documented." Aruna will persist in innovating and collaborating to protect Indonesia's seas. We believe that through the collaboration of various stakeholders, we can foster a healthier and more sustainable future for the ocean and the planet. #SeaForAll

Nangolo Mbumba on World Oceans Day, Walvis Bay: 7 June 2024 The scenic location where we find ourselves this morning provides a fitting backdrop for the celebration of this most important occasion – World Oceans Day. As Namibians and citizens of a seafaring and fishing nation among others, we observe and celebrate this day with keen interest, under the theme ‘Catalysing Action for Our Ocean and Climate’. It is a day to reflect on the significance of our ocean, to renew our commitment to its preservation, its sustainable use and to acknowledge the critical role the ocean plays in sustaining life on our planet. In his message to celebrate World Oceans Day last year, the secretary general of the United Nations, António Guterres, said: “The ocean is the foundation of life. It supplies the air we breathe and food we eat. It regulates our climate and weather. The ocean is our planet’s greatest reservoir of biodiversity. Its resources sustain communities, prosperity and human health around the world.” Taking this compelling statement into consideration, it should be clear to all of us why this day is important and why Namibia should join the rest of the world in celebrating the foundation of life that is the ocean, not only for today, but in the years and decades to come, for this generation and those that shall follow. The significance of the ocean to our planet is akin to the significance of the lungs to the human body. Just as our lungs provide us with the vital oxygen we need to survive, the ocean is responsible for producing more than 50% of the oxygen on earth. Put plainly, the health of our oceans directly impacts the health of our planet, and in turn, our own well-being. Our proximity to the ocean has enabled us to benefit from fishing in our ocean and other water bodies which contribute 5% percent to our gross domestic product with a revenue of N$10 billion annually, creating thousands of jobs and contributing to food security. Sadly, the ocean, upon which billions of people depend, is under threat from climate change and the harmful activities of humans. Rising sea levels, ocean acidification, plastic pollution, illegal unreported and unregulated fishing practices are just a few of the challenges we face. It is therefore imperative that we take urgent action to address these issues before it is too late. By reducing carbon emissions, eradicating plastic pollution, and actively combating all forms of environmental degradation, we, as Namibians, can give our ocean a breath of fresh air. Our youth, as catalysts of change, are central to creating a nexus between climate, nature and development, and as such they should play an integral role in the management of the ocean. Namibia is proud to be an active member of the High-Level Panel for a Sustainable Ocean Economy (Ocean Panel) and the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (Unclos). These…

🌍 Director & Head of Global Marketing @ ValuStrat | Driving Global Business Growth - B2B & B2C Segments | 🍃 Curious About Sustainable Business Practices
Marine #Sustainability: Riding the wave of plastic-free oceans 🌊 💡 It's striking that even though our plastic consumption is projected to triple by 2060 (according to OECD), particularly outside Europe and the US, a vast 80% of plastic in our oceans stems from merely 1% of rivers worldwide. This offers a sharp, actionable focus for sustainable solutions. With #COP28 around the corner, oceans' well-being and marine biology, pivotal to the earth's ecosystem, will be a hot topic for discussion. However, innovative sustainable initiatives, such as 'The Ocean Cleanup' project, deploy 'Interceptors' across the world's polluting rivers to stop trash tsunamis. Their recent endeavour in the Las Vacas River, Guatemala, is setting the benchmark 🏝. They implemented their 'Interceptor 006 Barricade', a system of extremely heavy-duty floating booms placed throughout the river to efficiently capture plastic while allowing the water to pass freely below the surface. 🔎 A glance at their Interceptor 006 achievements: 🔹 Kept 856,973 kg of waste out of the Caribbean 🔹 Tackled a river responsible for 2% of global oceanic plastic – equating to a massive 20,000 tonnes 🔹 Incorporated resilient booms robust even in floods 🔹 Removed 100,000kg from the Pacific Ocean garbage patch Initiatives like The Ocean Cleanup don't just address current challenges; they also inspire a forward-looking approach. Their model serves as a reminder of the promising intersections between sustainability, innovation and a blueprint for oceanic conservation. 🍃 #PlasticPollution #ValuStratNext #SustainableFuture #BluePlanet #ClimateAction #GlobalGoals #BlueEconomy #GreenInnovation

As we are celebrating World Ocean Day, The Skynth Research is eager to express our huge gratitude for all of these inspired activities initiated by highly motivated organizations since the birth of this event 💙 Since The Ocean Project began coordination of World Ocean Day in 2002 (proposed by the Canadians 10 years earlier at the Rio Earth Summit), this event has been widely seen as a unique opportunity to unite and rally the world for collective action on protecting oceans, which aims to promote the movement to conserve the ocean’s biodiversity and develop a stronger global constituency to advocate for healthy marine ecosystems and a stable climate. For the last 20 years, the founding organization of World Ocean Day has encouraged the inclusion of an annual theme to enhance individual and collective impacts during World Ocean Day celebrations, including: 🌐 2005-2008: World Ocean Day Conducted a campaign with the World Ocean Network to “#Help Make a Difference for Our Ocean Planet!” with a petition to the UN, to officially recognize 8th June as World Ocean Day, signed by tens of thousands worldwide. 🌍 2008: Launched an annual #Action Theme for the first time. “Helping our climate and helping our ocean”, with a special focus on coral #reefs for the International Year of the Reef, in collaboration with the International Coral Reef Initiative and other organizations. 🌎 2009-2010: A two-year theme “One Ocean, One #Climate, One #Future” was launched to integrate climate change with ocean health. 🌏 2011-2012: #“Youth: the Next Wave for Change” helped to generate more involvement with global youth, combined with action steps. 🗺 2013-2014: “Together we have the power to protect the ocean” showed how integrated actions can make a big difference in providing resources and tools for taking solutions to climate change, sustainable fisheries, and plastics. Break Free From Plastic was a key partner. 🏝 2015-2019: Based on the data from 2014 events – and with the issue of plastic pollution quickly worsening, a multi-year action was created on “preventing plastic pollution” to inspire the international community to find substantial solutions. 🏞 2020-2023: World Ocean Day spotlighted another important and relatively unknown issue, that served as a great opportunity for action: “Protecting at least 30% of our lands, waters, and ocean by 2030”, known as ''#30x30," , focusing on uniting conservation action to grow the global movement and calling on substantial support from world leaders, with Campaign for Nature helping as a key global partner. 💦 In 2024, a new multi-year action theme, Catalyzing #Action for Our #Ocean & #Climate will be launched, aiming to create not only a healthy blue planet, but also a more just, equitable, and sustainable society. In the next video, we will see how the cosmetics sector and consumers can contribute to the common cause. All for our beautiful blue life! (Source: World Ocean Day, 2024)
