NEWS! 🗞️ The DRC Mining Week 2024 provided a platform for influential female experts to share experiences, motivate, and inspire! The high tea forum hosted by USAID and Women IN shed light on the achievements and challenges faced by women in the mining sector. The panel, consisting of prominent figures, discussed reducing gender discrimination and advancing gender equity in the DRC’s mining sector. Despite the progress made, there is still a need for comprehensive policies that support women in all roles, from workers to mine owners, to ensure gender equity in the mining sector.
The percentage of women in mining has increased to about 12% in 2024, reflecting a positive trend, but leadership in policymaking is still minimal. Efforts to increase female representation in the industry have shown progress, with initiatives leading to an increase in female representation from 4% in 2021 to 7% in 2024 at Kamoa Copper SA. However, achieving gender equity requires ongoing commitment from both industry and government to create a culture that supports women in mining.
