A HARRIS MISSION: Tobias Harris (now with the Detroit Pistons) & his brother & former G-League forward, Terry Harris, are teaming up to bring much-needed affordable housing to Los Angeles. The Harris brothers said they are currently in development to bring 270 affordable housing units in three locations to the Echo Park neighborhood of Los Angeles. The projects include a 33-unit development, 93-unit development with retail, and a 190-unit development. The goal is to have 1,000 units in development in neighborhoods across the city by the end of the year. Terry Harris said that all of the properties are expected to be built from scratch and not refurbished old buildings. “This is a project that my younger brother and myself are in the works on now,” Tobias Harris told Andscape. “We are always figuring out ways to give back. In Los Angeles, there is a housing shortage. A lot of this is his initiative that I am supporting. It’s still early, but we’re working on a lot of things to make it happen.” Athletes catch a lot of heat for various reasons, among them: social responsibility and salaries. There are a LOT of stories like this throughout the NBA and sports as a whole but they don't get the press. Many athletes give back. It's usually neighborhood initiatives like this that often go unnoticed. Celebrating Community Engagement, Trust, and Black Joy at The Learning Tree Common Ground Gathering Day 2 🌟 On the second day of the Common Ground Gathering, we were inspired by the keynote discussion featuring Pamela Ross Ross and Mark Lewis. Their insights into philanthropy, trust, and the power of Black joy in community empowerment were truly transformative. Pamela Ross, formerly of the Indianapolis Foundation, emphasized the importance of investing in Black joy to create resilient and thriving communities. Mark Lewis, President and CEO of the Poise Foundation, highlighted the significance of developing grassroots Black power through collective resource mobilization. The past week has been non-stop, in all the best ways, and one of the highlights was a midweek City of Richmond Department of Economic Development Authority Board Meeting. I've heard recently that people aren't aware of the volunteer service that I undertake, and what I consider as core to what I do. I feel that civic service and helping to build up the city is key to giving back. My volunteer service looks a little different than what traditionally comes to mind. I serve and have served in a number of different boards and committees throughout the years. By my last count, I'm on eleven different boards, committees, advisory groups, sub-committees, etc, ranging from service with Richmond Association of REALTORS®, Virginia REALTORS® National Association of REALTORS®, Seven Hills School, & City of Richmond EDA. I've also been involved with SMCRVA (IYKYK), Special Olympics Virginia, Inc., Commission of Architectural Review for the City of Richmond, & Henrico CASA Every time I get on a new committee or board, I feel out of place, out of my element. But I read, I listen, I learn, I always try to rise to the responsibility that has been entrusted in me. The leaders you see in these places aren't smarter than everyone else (although they are wonderful, smart, capable leaders). They are ready to put themselves out there. They are dedicated to making their communities better and serving the greater good. There are many positions that go unfilled in boards and committees that deserve more attention, whether it's a city, state, or non-profit role. The policy space is one that I find fitting and necessary but with Affirmative Action being overturned and attacks on DEI becoming so prevalent in southern states, the average young academic of color may be slowly disappearing from the policy space. There is even a fear within youth that career growth will be stunted due to all these forms of suppression in the U.S., especially those who are aiming for careers in the non-profit sector. While Gen Z is one of the most active and outspoken generations of all time, there is a looming idea that our voices will be removed, especially when there have been continuous attacks on the spaces where voices are heard the loudest."
