Could not be more excited to launch our fourth round of the Reinventing Our Communities (ROC) Cohort Program today! Looking forward to working along 11 new communities from coast to coast, removing barriers to equitable workforce development and inclusive rental housing, to build stronger regional economies. -- Philadelphia, PA — The Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia today launched its fourth Reinventing Our Communities (ROC) Cohort Program in 11 communities across the country. Each cohort of cross-sector community leaders is developing a locally tailored, multiyear plan to expand economic opportunities and strengthen their regional economy. Participants are focused on improving regional access to workforce development programs or affordable rental housing. Participating communities include Camden, NJ; Easton, PA; Lancaster County, PA; and Lebanon County, PA. During the 14-month program, communities are also engaging in webinars, coaching from national community development leaders, racial equity training, and peer learning. The Philadelphia Fed is partnering on the program with the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta, Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City, Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco, and Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond, in addition to Equitable Cities Consulting, NeighborWorks America, and Race Forward.

I have witnessed firsthand in our community the high turnover rates, burnout, and complete undervaluing of nonprofit employees. Our sector needs to shift from a paradigm of scarcity and fear to one of worth and value. Nonprofit leaders cannot shrink from ensuring their staff are fairly compensated. These two inactions have stagnated our sector, impeding our organizations from competing for the best talent. Valuing employees and recognizing their CHOICE to work in the nonprofit sector feels like creating environments and spaces where employees are: 1) paid competitively to other sectors; 2) valued for their work as team members; and 3) acknowledged as the people who are most important to the advancement of the mission.

Through connections with community organizations, UPMC is breaking down barriers to employment while assembling a stronger workforce. Auberle works with more than 150 referring agencies to accept clients in need of support, including employment training and placement, and partners with more than 200 organizations like UPMC to place those individuals, both teen and adult, with potential employers. The McKeesport, Pa.-based human services nonprofit operates, among other programs, the Employment Institute, a workforce development program that helps individuals who may face challenges finding, obtaining, or maintaining employment to succeed in the workforce. The cohorts are trained at UPMC Presbyterian Shadyside, primarily in Food and Nutrition roles like food service attendant, cook, and catering host, through Auberle’s Employment Institute. It’s a new extension of a partnership that’s already paid dividends: More than 90 people have been placed into employment through a collaboration between Auberle and UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital over the past two years. And it’s just one of a number of similar programs blooming throughout UPMC’s footprint that are lifting up the communities we serve while creating a stronger workforce and a better experience for the people for whom we provide care. 💜

Real talk time: The Price of Bravery: Embracing Change for True Impact At the start of the end of 2022, I realised that working within the constraints of the funding system was no longer a viable path to effect real change. This April marked the final month of our funded employability service. While I cherished the opportunity to support individuals, the funding landscape often forced us to fit people into predefined boxes, even as we worked tirelessly to think outside of them to fulfil our mission. Some people have remarked on my bravery. Still, to me, it was an action born out of the necessity to protect my own, my team's, and our community's well-being. At the same time, we navigated various challenges to achieve the greatest impact possible. Unfortunately, the answer was to cut ties with the employability funds and move to a self-sustaining model. The funding constraints left us under-resourced and overworked, and we often experienced extractivism from larger organisations that depended on funding to survive. Collaboration became a mere buzzword on application forms, rarely materialising in practice. This led to a cycle of dependency, contradicting our mission to empower individuals. Our new income-generating model will enable us to offer targeted support and provide people with the tools and autonomy they need to thrive. By removing dependency, we can break the vicious cycle and truly make a difference.
