As part of the King's Speech last week, the new Product Safety and Metrology Bill was introduced.
The new bill will ensure that the UK maintains its global leadership in product regulation and consumer protection.
Every person in the UK uses products within the scope of the Bill, and the new legislation is estimated to affect at least 220,000 businesses.
The Bill covers:
✔️More effective regulation of high-risk and new products: Such as E-bikes, AI and lithium batteries.
✔️Increased regulation for new and emerging business models: This will mean clearer responsibilities for product suppliers and prevent companies from overseas placing unsafe goods on the UK market via online platforms.
✔️End to the recognition of EU product regulations: Ensuring the UK can respond more quickly to safety challenges, regulate new products, and drive innovation and economic growth.
✔️Updates to the Legal Metrology Framework: This will allow for technological progress whilst maintaining accuracy of equipment.
The Government says that these changes are designed to foster innovation, increase consumer confidence and ensure the UK remains a leader in manufacturing standards.
As of today, there is no confirmed date as to when the recognition of EU product regulations will end, but to future-proof your business, we would advise using the UKCA mark for the initial placement of new products on the UK Market and booking your upcoming audits in advance to ensure all certificates are up to date.
