This "Chinese Medicine and Culture" article explores how Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) tackled the challenge of cholera during the late Qing Dynasty. Two main schools of thought emerged, offering contrasting approaches to diagnosing and treating this new disease. The School of Cholera with Cold Patterns (SCCP), led by Kou Langao and Xu Zimo, viewed cholera through the lens of existing typhoid theories. They diagnosed it as a "cold pattern" disease, suggesting a different treatment approach than what was typically used for fevers. On the other hand, the School of Cholera with Heated Patterns (SCHP), influenced by Wang Shixiong's studies, saw cholera as a "heated pattern" disease under the theory of epidemic febrile diseases. This perspective offered a contrasting diagnosis and treatment plan. Despite their differences, both schools played a crucial role. They improved the understanding of cholera within the TCM framework, leading to better diagnosis and treatment methods for this new and challenging illness. New in longevity research: An insightful study highlights the link between ancestral longevity and extended healthspan A groundbreaking study published in Nature Communications reveals a significant connection between the longevity of ancestors and the healthspan of their descendants. The study group analyzed data from over 17,000 individuals in 2,143 families from two databases: the Leiden Longevity Study (LLS) from The Netherlands and The Scanian Economic-Demographic Database (SEDD) from Sweden. The study group found that having a greater number of long-lived ancestors may extend healthspan by up to a decade. Within these families, the start of medication use and multimorbidity seem to be delayed. All the LLS blood samples were analyzed using the Nightingale Health blood analysis service, which also enabled the comparison of metabolomic profiles. Long-lived family members turned out to have healthier metabolomic profiles than their partners. This study underscores the importance of family health history in understanding and potentially mitigating multimorbidity. 📢 𝐍𝐞𝐰 #𝐏𝐚𝐩𝐞𝐫 𝐀𝐥𝐞𝐫𝐭: 𝐇𝐲𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐇𝐢𝐠𝐡 𝐀𝐥𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐏𝐞𝐫𝐮 We're thrilled to announce our latest findings published in PLoS One, which explore how altitude affects hypertension among Peruvians. Our research reveals significant differences in hypertension prevalence between high and low altitudes. Key insights: ➡ Overall lower prevalence of hypertension at higher altitudes compared to lower ones. ➡Decreased prevalence of isolated systolic hypertension (ISH) and an increased prevalence of isolated diastolic hypertension (IDH) at higher altitudes. These findings emphasize the complexity of cardiovascular health in high-altitude environments and the need for tailored healthcare interventions. Dive deeper into our study to understand the interplay of environmental and genetic factors on hypertension at high altitudes. 🚀 Just attended a SUPER, inspiring talk by my amazing friend, Dr. Gabrielle Lyon, DO at on “Muscle as the Organ of Longevity”! 💪🏽 Dr. Lyon, a pioneer in #muscle-centric #medicine, emphasized the crucial role of muscle in extending lifespan and enhancing #healthspan. Her groundbreaking approach integrates rigorous science with practical strategies to optimize #muscle and #metabolic health, prevent #sarcopenia, and make #longevity more achievable. A recent study in Nature supports this perspective, highlighting how muscle tissue acts as a vital endocrine organ, influencing #metabolism, #immune function, and even #brain health (Pedersen & Febbraio, 2012) 🔬📈. This underscores the importance of maintaining muscle mass through targeted exercise and nutrition as we age. Dr. Lyon's contributions to longevity medicine are monumental. Her dedication to translating complex scientific insights into actionable health strategies empowers individuals to take control of their health and longevity. 🌟👩⚕️Let's redefine aging with strength and vitality! 💥#Longevity #Healthspan #MuscleHealth #AgingWell #DrGabrielleLyon #IFMAIC2024 #Fitness #HealthyLiving #Wellness Reference:Pedersen, B. The double edge sword of uric acid ... Uric acid acts as a potent antioxidant and has been reported to be neuroprotective. High uric acid levels and gout are also thought to be risk factors associated with neurodegenerative and cardio-metabolic diseases. My thoughts based on this article is that this increased incidence of gout is a signal that the body is trying to repair something and that an increased incidence of neurodegenerative and cardio-metabolic diseases will follow. Is it wise to bring down uric acid levels? I think that it would be wise to look for whatever is causing the need for uric acid levels to rise in the first place. Clues may also be in the hotspot areas where people are most effected. #TBI #longcovid #hypoxia #neurodegeneration #adaptation

🌱Annona muricata Guanábana, Custard Apple: Leaves have traditional uses for fever, pain, hypertension, and topical for skin illness. Antiparasitic internally and externally, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory properties are endorsed by folk medicine. The fruit, other than a smooth and delicious treat, is classified in herbalism as a galactogogue (produces lactation), and for the treatment of diarrhea & heart and liver disease. The unripe fruit seeds, leaves and roots are also used as natural biopesticides/insecticides. It's important to note that while natural plant medicine has a rich global history that far exceeds modern science, consulting with a healthcare professional is advisable before using it for medicinal purposes. The project is an effort to help preserve generational wisdom of a remote mountain haven, knowledge that disappearing due to economic displacement. It is also a beginning attempt for me at scientific illustration. Advice and guidance is welcome!
