With the way the world is moving and the pressures of candidates to register to see career progression and offer companies the safety net of registered professionals, you have ECSA in 2024 (not even 1944) coming with an archaic route map that allows two windows of submission, which are followed by four months of admin. Let alone where you have a subjective evaluation process that is not conscious of realities on the ground. You can add another few months to the process. An example is people who are in the public sector that are required to remember hydraulic calculations yet their functional job is to give such work to consultants 🫣 (this is real case example of a candidate I was helping) - they final made it through at the end. And the admin within ECSA is a few months as well, seems they work in silos there at Bruma Lake office park. Candidates are better off going to get CEng to be honest.
To all ECSA Professional and Specified Category applicants, please note that the first cycle for submissions as per the Applications Calendar will close on 29 February 2024. Applicants to ensure that all the required documents are included in the pack and submitted to engineer@ecsa.co.za, by 29 February 2024 before 17h00. Click here to access the calendar: https://lnkd.in/djkt5RDr

If you have the requisite skills to perform the work required to be successful as a system engineer then in my opinion there is no need to find a method of assertion to improve your own standing in the field.

Network discovery in a brownfield, installation validation/SAT and design all have the concept of a point of diminishing returns. Discovery is limited by visibility and continuity of the network. Validation is limited by the feasibility of test protocol development and execution. Design is limited by the "X" factor of environments and dependencies still in flux and intended usage changing between concept and implementation. While it is possible to get to 100% in all of these, the point of maximum yield is something that needs to be identified, discussed, and agreed versus the criticality of initial success and the tolerance for flex and adjustment during execution. This scope-level agreement is something that needs to be done at the beginning of engagements so that customers have confidence in transparency and agreed quality, that delivery teams can predict resources required, and commercial leaders can allow for costs.

Sometimes when I want to take a long night’s drive, I use this interface command: switchport trunk allowed vlan 123 I also get some friends on the phone to talk with during the drive. A lot of people can’t sleep either after that command, it’s weird. ****Disclaimer**** Do NOT run this command during/in production environments. The correct way is to include options like; add, remove, or any other acceptable option. For Example: switchport trunk allowed vlan add 123 switchport trunk allowed vlan remove 123 This preserves the original configuration and only applies the new changes. We are allowed to make mistakes as network engineers, but, we are also to be highly aware and respectful to the protocols put in place to prevent unnecessary downtime. ALWAYS go through your proper Change Control process.
