In the most recent survey published by Deloitte Global’s Women @ Work: A Global Outlook 2024, it was established that many women say they’re more stressed than a year ago, and nearly half are worried about their safety when at work, commuting to work, or traveling for work. Another notable proposition is that flexibility and work/life balance are critical for retention. Women who noted higher levels of satisfaction at work worked for companies with an established culture where everyone felt supported, the company's work policies allowed for flexible working and work-life balance, and finally, the company had opportunities for women that allowed for faster career progression. Now in its fourth year, the survey strives to understand women's lived experiences at work and how aspects of their lives outside work can impact these experiences. The gender pay gap is slowly closing, but workplaces still have a long way to go before achieving true equality. In its fourth year, Deloitte’s Women at Work report explores the experiences of 5,000 women in workplaces across 10 countries, examining persistent workplace and societal challenges—from #MentalHealth to safety concerns, and more. When it comes to safety, the number of women who report experiencing non-inclusive behaviors such as harassment and microaggressions has decreased since last year. However, 43% of women still say they have experienced one or more of these behaviors in the past year. These experiences give insight into the continuing challenges women are facing in the workplace and illustrate how much employers still need to do to help create a safer environment where women can thrive. I often hear the two words "women" and "ambition" spoken like the north and south poles of a magnet. 🧲 So then I did an eye role when a well meaning friend sent me a McKinsey article titled "The Truth About Women's Ambition." The name of the article sounded like it promised a big reveal. It raised some good points and pointed to some sound research like the McKinsey Women in the Workplace 2023 report, but the title in itself was a little click-baity. In my experience, women have been quietly getting on trying to live their own version of their best life where work and life are in harmony (work-life integration NOT work-life balance) for as long as I've been in the workplace. The reason why this is so shocking and newsworthy is because the mainstream hasn't picked up on this slow and gradual shift yet. What do you think?
