It is a race against time, and tide, for C.H. Paindi, a resident of the Podampatta village on the coast of #odisha. Once a village that thrived with 100s of people, she is the only one left today. Coastal Odisha is slowly being swallowed by the sea. Almost half of Odisha’s coast—196 km of shoreline—has undergone erosion between 1990 and 2015. Since 2015, tides have been getting more aggressive by the day. Data from the National Centre for Sustainable Coastal Management shows that 74 villages in the state are severely affected by shoreline erosion—the highest in the country. The government is well aware of the crisis and has been implementing measures to stabilise select areas of the state’s coastline since 2012. In Podampetta, So far, the sea has engulfed 200 houses. The remaining 100 houses stand in a dilapidated condition, giving Podampatta the eerie look of a ghost village. Little does the city know that most of the material sold is a mix of different breed of sheeps from Rajasthan and Ahmedabad. This is the same case with cities like Cochin,Calicut and other parts of coastal cities where they end up called soft mutton in different names but actually the retailers get mutton from Rajasthan or some other part Of India except BANNUR! Bannur actually is a breed of Sheep from Myosre region in Karnataka which is a sought after prime meat 🍖 that is a choice at most weddings in the region. The breed commands a whopping 2000 Rs/KG is a choice of the elite at weddings. The breed takes about 2 years to reach culling age and are very few in number in the region. While Bannur village struggles to preserve its piece of fame,Another part of Karnataka is trying to make a side hustle out of it . …FROM HIRANANDANI TO ADANI As I continue to relax in Italy, I was listening to The Ranveer Show (TRS) and his interview with the real estate tycoon, Mr Niranjan Hiranandani! For those who haven’t heard of Mr Hiranandani, he is a 74-year-old Indian billionaire businessman, co-founder and managing director of Hiranandani Group, engaged in real estate business. Born of Sindhi heritage, he’s ranked by Forbes among the 100 richest Indians, with a net worth of US$1.6 billion as of June 2021. He’s also been awarded with the Padma Bhushan Award by the Government of India. 🇮🇳 For those of us who visited Powaii around the year 2000, I’m sure you felt the ‘WOW’ factor when stepping into the Hiranandani apartments as they really were a hallmark of the change that India was about to witness! I certainly did! ** Anyway, when Ranveer asked Mr Hiranandani what he was most proud of, it wasn’t the design or the environment he’d created, but the quality and sustainability of his contribution. Here are some he mentions in the podcast. - He built 5,000 apartments at the time, and 35 years on, not a single flat leaks! - The structures are so sound that none need alterations, and only some buildings need repainting now. - He built the largest sewage recycling plant that handles four billion litres of water everyday, and this was well before people spoke of sustainability as we do today. I could go on, but the key message for me here is that not only do you not compromise on quality, but you’ve got to be a lot more solid on the inside than you appear on the outside! In an era of fake everything, from fake meat to fake 👄 lips, I just wanted to share this thought. ** And now of course, as the Adani group has taken it upon themselves to transform Dharavi, I cannot wait to see them deliver upon their promise.
