They are things that we metric to approximate impact, and the metrics have lost sight of what impact really means. Instead, take your talents and use them as part of a team effort to get life saving drugs, devices, and technologies in the hands of patients. If you want, you can do that in biotech and pharma. I was at #analytica, and I found it terrifying and fascinating. Here is my take on it. 𝐅𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭: What drives innovation in #preclinical Pharma R&D? As everyone who transitioned to "the dark side of science" may confirm, scientists and solution providers see #innovation quite differently. From the perspective of Pharma scientists, solution providers and CROs are little more than "vendors" to be managed. Why? - Too many - Too hungry - Too similar - Too uninformed In all this, the information asimmetry between scientists and solution providers is incredible. Solution providers often rely on stringing together anecdotal information on single user cases or on heavy and not often well-targeted internal R&D for new development. The result? - Mega stands for the big names - Shadows for the small firms - Overall the same products, instruments, consumables. I visited Pharma & University Labs in 30 countries. Here 5 things I learned: . . . 1️⃣ Scientists are funny, because science is fun. Plus, they spend so much time pipetting that something is bound to mess with their brain 🤣 2️⃣ Biologists hate engineers hate chemists hate computer scientists hate biostatisticians hate biologists. Actually not true, they simply often don't speak the same language, but if they work together they can do wonders ! 3️⃣ Everyone thinks the other labs have more money. Sometimes it's true, sometimes they just allocate resources differently. 4️⃣ The most successful labs use primary biological samples and build a story around them. And this is a different story from all other cell line users, with whom them to raise from the noise. 5️⃣ The most impactful labs use great instruments and started automating early. This way they increase the output of their labs per unit of time, fail more often and publish at a higher pace at higher impact factor. Unsurprisingly, they also win more grants.
