The US is on the “silk slipper descending the stairs” phase. Others can see it, even if we’re too wrapped up in our silly squabbles to realize it. We’ve nominated a corrupt senile fool and a corrupt megalomaniac for the 2nd time. It’s not too late to change course. The US can be leaders in shaping the rest of the 21st century, or fade into relative irrelevance as we avoid facing uncomfortable conversations. This video provides a sober and objective perspective on the global order. How do we reshape the conversation to one that is based on principle and not short-term convenience? Only by doing that will we regain our role as leaders on the global stages.

🔍 Carl Baker, Executive Director and senior advisor at #PacificForum, was recently interviewed by Jay Fidell for Think Tech Hawaii to discuss 'Are we Paying Enough Attention to South East Asia; What is China Doing to Engage with Them?' 🌏 Carl Baker provides an in-depth analysis of the post-Covid development of South East Asian countries and evaluates the engagement strategies of the US and China in the region. A key takeaway from the discussion: As the US navigates its focus on Ukraine and the Middle East, it must also pay critical attention to China and South East Asia to maintain its global leadership. 🎥 Watch the full interview for more insights: https://lnkd.in/g7Ci93j5 #SouthEastAsia #USChinaRelations

Hot off the press! I’m excited to share that two co-authored papers have just been published in the special issue "Culture and Leadership in Slavic Nations" in Cross-Cultural Research (Sage). Huge thanks to Jasenko Ljubica, PhD and Romie Frederick Littrell for leading this project! The first paper, co-authored with Michal Szymanski and titled "Where West Meets East: Culture and Preferred Leader Behavior in Poland A and Poland B", explores cultural differences between these regions, separated by the Vistula River, and compares leadership preferences among those born before and after the transformative year of 1989. Link to the article: https://lnkd.in/gK4StT39 The second paper, co-authored with Amra Kožo, Ivana Bulog, Ana Tomovska Misoska, Pavlína Honsová, and Ivona Mileva, PhD, titled "Culture and Preferred Leadership Behaviors: A Cross-Cultural Exploration of Slavic Nations", examines the links between societal culture and leadership preferences across Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, the Czech Republic, North Macedonia, Poland, Russia, and Serbia. The study highlights both common patterns and intriguing cultural differences. On the second day of the 17th Australia-China Emerging Leaders Summit, ACYA was delighted to host for delegates a fireside chat with Emeritus Professor Colin Mackerras AO FAHA; on personal reflections from 60 years of China engagement. Interlaced with his personal story, Professor Mackerras observed the development of China, the differences in internationalisation between China's young people of the 1960s and today, and the divergences in values and ideas between China and the Western world; the overcoming of which to facilitate cross-cultural understanding argued to be premised on immersion and experience. On Australia's China capacity, Professor Mackerras also remarked of deficiencies in Australia's study of China and its analyses of China affairs, and that notwithstanding existing challenges, there remains a necessity to retain a more nuanced, balanced understanding of China accounting for both positive and negative sides. #ACELS17 #auschina #acya
