In the context of #Nepal, political jolts and #uncertainty often stem from shifting alliances among political parties due to #CoalitionPolitics. In the last three and a half decades, Coalition Politics has perpetuated the #PoliticalInstability in Nepal, preventing the country from achieving its developmental aspirations. The consideration of firm ideological alignment for the political coalition has remained absent in Nepalese Coalition Politics, and #PoliticalSurvival has remained at its core. Is Nepal a failed or failing state? It is now 16 years since the constituent assembly abolished the 240-year-old monarchy. Thirteen elected governments have followed in the course of these years, and political stability remains elusive. Two days ago, Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal aka Prachanda saw a coalition ally walk out. Senior Madhesi leader Upendra Yadav of the Janta Samajwadi Party quit after his own party split. What happens now? Yubaraj Ghimire, Editor of Deshsanchar Pvt Ltd, an online news portal in Kathmandu, speaking on The Gist, said the prime minister would have to seek a vote of confidence at some point. He is in no danger of falling because he has the support of the Communist Party of Nepal and its leader KP Sharma Oli. But Ghimire believes it is Oli who engineered the current crisis because he wants to be prime minister. Of course he doesn’t want to give the impression that he wants the job, that would not look good politically, but about Oli’s ambitions there should be no doubt. In this context, Ghimire makes another point: Nepali politicians are driven entirely by personal ambition. This applies even to the communists, so alliances are made and unmade with only personal convenience in mind. Tune in for more in this conversation with Yubaraj Ghimire in Kathmandu. Nitin A. An Unsavoury Stew: South Asia in 2024 Sharing my 'Subcontinental Drift' column in Dhaka Tribune. (Please see link below): https://lnkd.in/gw8r75T5 This is the first in a series of heads-up/advisories related to real-time policy issues for the first half of 2024. It deals with the fallout of religious priming for India's imminent general elections to its Parliament; the go-tos in imploding Myanmar; and the sometimes vexing hyphenation that is China-India. It feels good to see that major newspapers (besides Dhaka Tribune, which has run the column for a year!) and policy talking-heads in Bangladesh have come around to the ideas, analyses and suggestions we have made several times in the past year, especially with regard to Myanmar, the Rohingya issue, and Eastern South Asia.

𝐍𝐞𝐩𝐚𝐥’𝐬 𝐏𝐫𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐌𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐎𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐅𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐨𝐰𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐍𝐨-𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐟𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐕𝐨𝐭𝐞 On 12 July, #Nepal’s Prime Minister #PushpaKamalDahal was #Ousted after #19months in power following a #NoConfidenceVote. A total of 194 lawmakers voted against him, while 63 supported him. Dahal opted for the vote rather than resigning after the #CommunistParty of Nepal (Unified Marxist Leninist) withdrew #support on 3 July. The CPN-UML and #NepaliCongress (NC) claim their #Alliance aims to #Stabilize politics and amend the #ElectoralSystem, though many believe it’s to sideline #CorruptionInvestigations. Since December 2022, Dahal led a #FragileCoalition, seeking votes of confidence five times due to #InternalDisagreements. The #President will now call for a #NewGovernment formation. An #Agreement between CPN- UML and NC suggest alternating #18MonthTerms until the #2027GeneralElection. Reports indicate CPN-UML may head nine ministries, including #Finance, while NC may lead 10 ministries, including #HomeAffairs. This power-sharing deal will challenge Nepal’s #BalancingAct between #China and #India, as CPN-UML is seen as #ProChina and NC as #ProIndia. South Asia has the biggest and by far the BEST democracy in the world. India. The great Indian democracy contains more people than US & Europe combined. Despite low income (after $45 trillion were stolen by UK) - Indians work hard & honestly - to slowly build themselves. WHILE practicing democracy WITHOUT compromises 🇮🇳. The predominantly Hindu culture has ensured that the democracy is an essential part of Indian DNA. 🕉️ Bhutan Bangladesh Nepal & SriLanka derive inspiration from the great Indian democracy. Tibet aspires too. So do Baluchistan Baltistan & Gilgit. India & US together can make the entire South Asia a shining example of democracy that follows the Indian example. It should be noted that India is a democracy that never indulged in slave trade. Did not kill 50 million natives. Does not try to colonise the world. Does not steal money from other countries. The list is long …
Bhutan. "With democracy under assault across much of South Asia, Bhutan seems to be an outlier. It began a relatively smooth transition from traditional monarchy to democracy a little more than 15 years ago." https://lnkd.in/gZVxqiNp
