The ONE thing that stands out when reflecting on building a £750,000 contract desk! It’s super simple. Passive conversation. The contract recruitment world is full of people who claim to be fast-paced, target driven, and able to make deals happen quickly. This forces the majority of contract recruiters to focus only on the object in front of them Being that immediate role they are trying to fill or find In reality, not every contractor you deal with is gonna wanna work with you right now or be available In fact, most don’t even consider leaving contracts early despite the lure of being headhunted for more money Because it damages their reputation So focusing only on that conversation and moving on = transactional! Because, unlike permanent candidates, there will be an end date to their contract You need to make sure you note this down as the time will come when they will need you So my approach was a passive conversation What do I mean by this? I would phone people regularly when I didn’t have a job for them and be honest about it My fave line was this - “I’ve actually got nothing for you right now, but knowing this market as I do and seeing the experience you’ve got, I can guarantee that in the future, it’s gonna be mutually beneficial to know each other” I just wanted to find out how they were and what they wanted in future I wanted to be remembered So contract recruiters out there- be fast, be thorough, and build for tomorrow as it will come around faster than you think!
