☑️ *READ ASTRACT BELOW:* Keywords: Chain mediating; Child maltreatment; Maternal adverse childhood experiences; Parenting stress; Preschoolers' executive functions. Part 1: Background: Previous researches found that maternal adverse childhood experiences not only affect the psychological behavior of preschool children, but also have direct or indirect negative effects on the executive functions and cognition of offspring. And, the possible social psychological mechanism between maternal adverse childhood experiences and preschool children's executive functions is still not clear. Objectives: This study mainly tries to understand the association between parenting stress and child maltreatment in maternal adverse childhood experiences and children's executive functions through longitudinal cohort. Participants and setting: Participants were 2160 preschool children and their mothers who finally completed baseline and 3 waves of follow-up. Methods: Using a cohort study, a baseline survey of junior kindergartens was carried out in June 2021 and followed up every six months, with a total of 3 follow-ups. Autism Center Team Publishes Practical Suggestions for Neurodiversity-Affirming Clinical Care People with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) face barriers in finding neurodiversity-affirming clinical care that is suited to their communication style and needs. In this chapter, Drs. Sam Brandsen, Tara Chandrasekhar and Lauren Franz offer practical suggestions for creating a safe, accessible, and effective clinical care approach for individuals with IDD. 🌟 The Impact of Structural Racism on the Developing Brain 🌟 📊 Recent Research Findings: A groundbreaking study in the American Journal of Psychiatry highlights the profound effects of structural racism on Black children's brain development. Led by Nathaniel Harnett at McLean Hospital, the study analyzed MRI scans of over 9,000 children. Key findings include: 📍 Lower gray matter volumes in the amygdala, hippocampus, and prefrontal cortex in Black children 📍 Adversity acts as a toxic stressor, disproportionately affecting Black children 🧠 These findings emphasize that differences are not inherent but due to structural racism and adversity. Addressing these disparities is crucial for mental health equity. 💬 Join the Conversation: Understanding these impacts is the first step towards change. Let's commit to dismantling structures that perpetuate these disparities and support mental health for all. 🔗 For more insights, check out the full study: https://lnkd.in/gudmcuWx #minoritymentalhealth #bipoc #systemicracism #racialequity #racialjustice #mentalhealth #healthequity #publichealth

Fellow parents of tweens/pre-teens: I SEE YOU! So this week, I’m kicking off a new series called “The Inflection Years,” which pulls in research from the disciplines of psychiatry and neuroscience and tackles real scenarios and problems that are common across millions of households. Do you have kids aged 8 and 15? If so, this series is for you. Follow me for weekly answers to questions like: — How to set limits on social media and talk to your kid about it — How to understand “defiance” as a developmental milestone and respond to it when you hear it — Why kids that age need mentors that aren’t their parents And more! Check out more about this series at https://lnkd.in/gUzb3nFp What questions do you have that I should be tackling? Let me know in the comments! #mentalhealth #parenting

Catch up: Changes in the Concept of Autism Watch more via: https://gres.hm/new-autism Our understanding of #autism has changed over the last forty years. Historically, autism was diagnosed based on narrow criteria. Today, while still defined by social and communication difficulties, rigid interests and repetitive behaviours, the autism spectrum is far wider, and the historical under-diagnosis of women and girls is being addressed. ‘Autisms’ are more often discussed as #neurodivergence rather than a single ‘disorder’ to be treated. Professor Francesca Happé of King's College London* explores how our understanding of autism has changed, and directions for future research. * Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience #neurodiversity #learningdisability #AutismAwareness #AutismAwarenessMonth

☑️ *READ ABSTRACT BELOW:* Keywords: Attachment; Controlled trial; Intervention research; Maternal representations; Parenting; Randomized A key mechanism of risk transmission between maternal risk and child outcomes are the mother's representations. The current study examined the effects of an attachment-based, trauma-informed parenting intervention, the Mom Power (MP) program, in optimizing maternal representations of high-risk mothers utilizing a randomized, controlled trial design (NCT01554215). High-risk mothers were recruited from low-income community locations and randomized to either the MP Intervention (n = 42) or a control condition (n = 33) in a parallel design. Maternal representations were assessed before and after the intervention using the Working Model of the Child Interview. The proportion of women with balanced (secure) representations increased in the MP group but not in the control group. Parenting Reflectivity for mothers in the treatment group significantly increased, with no change in the control condition. Participation in the MP program was associated with improvements in a key indicator of the security of the parent-child relationship: mothers' representations of their children. Neurodivergence: Understanding The History Behind Its Defining Characteristics & Longlasting Stigma For most of the 20th Century, neurodiverse conditions like autism were considered to be quite rare, having less to do with their prevalence but more so with their researcher characteristics. Despite books like “The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders” having definitions for disabilities like ADHD or autism, the 1990s saw notable increases for both once clinical diagnoses began to understand the complexities of neurodiversity. So today on AirTalk, for this installment of our neurodiversity series, we get into this century-long development of definitions and how recent decades have led to a much more nuanced look into what neurodiversity is. Joining hosts Austin Cross and Julia Paskin for this discussion are Steve Silberman, science writer and author of the book “NeuroTribes: The Legacy of Autism and the Future of Neurodiversity”, and Dr. Shulamite Green, licensed clinical psychologist and assistant professor of psychiatry and biobehavioral sciences at UCLA. ☑️ *READ ASTRACT BELOW:* Keywords: attachment; brain development; deprivation; institutionalization; neglect The absence of typical caregiving, including warm and responsive parenting, has been suggested to significantly affect the young child's ability to form adaptive relationships with adults and peers. The Bucharest Early Intervention Project (BEIP), a randomized controlled trial of foster/family care for young children with a history of institutionalization has provided the context to assess these relationships. Here we review data from the BEIP with specific focus on attachment. The findings clearly show the importance of early family care on the emergence of attachment, on the prevention of psychopathology, and on links between brain and social behavior.
