About us
The Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience (IoPPN) at King’s College London is Europe’s largest centre for research and education in psychiatry, psychology, and basic and clinical neuroscience. It produces more highly cited outputs (top 1% citations) on psychiatry and mental health than any other centre (SciVal 2021), and on this metric has risen from 16th (2014) to 4th (2021) in the world for highly cited neuroscience outputs. In the 2021 Research Excellence Framework (REF), 90% of research at the IoPPN was deemed ‘world leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’ (3* and 4*). World-leading research from the IoPPN has made, and continues to make, an impact on how we understand, prevent and treat mental illness, neurological conditions, and other conditions that affect the brain.

Around 1.8 billion people worldwide menstruate each month. Despite this, menstruation remains understudied - especially the effects on mental health. IoPPN researchers, Dr Kitty Jones, Xanthe Healy and Dr Helena Zavos, organised a community engagement event called ‘Let’s talk about menstruation and mental health’. In their new blog, they discuss some of the key themes that emerged from the event. New research suggests that childhood maltreatment - particularly neglect - is associated with greater cognitive difficulties than we previously thought. Most research in this area has relied on retrospective reports of childhood maltreatment in adulthood. The new study suggests having an official record of maltreatment is associated with cognitive difficulties whereas retrospective report was not. 🔗 Read the full story ➡ https://lnkd.in/endF4_R4 #Neglect #Cognition #ChildDevelopment #ChildPsychology #ChildPsychiatry The Lancet | King's College London | The King's Maudsley Partnership | National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) | Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) | The City University of New York | NIHR Maudsley Biomedical Research Centre (BRC)
