This article discusses the struggles of three post-9/11 veterans with obtaining prosthetics and proper care from the Department of Veterans Affairs. The veterans recount long wait times, bureaucratic hurdles, and a lack of understanding from the VA in regards to their needs. One veteran even had a part of his prosthetic repossessed due to a billing issue. On average, veterans pay 65% more in out-of-pocket dental costs compared to non-veterans, according to a report from the American Institute of Dental Public Health and CareQuest Institute for Oral Health. The New York State Dental Foundation Salute Vets with a Smile program is helping tackle the #DentalCare crisis among veterans. Respondents indicated that their experiences with VA prosthetic care were slower and less responsive than the care provided by the DoD. Matt’s story demonstrates the ongoing struggle so many Veteran amputees suffer through. Even after eventually receiving the proper prosthetic, ongoing treatment proved to be another challenge.
