Last Saturday, I had the pleasure of speaking with a Chinese audience at Sino-In-Talk with ZiJin H.. I shared my perspectives and experiences on a variety of topics: traveling without money, maximizing learning and fun in college life, innovation and marketing, and networking skills. Some of the exciting insights I covered included: 👉 Purpose-driven travel: how to travel without money through crowdfunding, trading skills for stay, and volunteering. 👉 Collaboration in college: the importance of student clubs and how they foster innovation and creativity. 👉 Marketing strategies: guerilla marketing and experiential marketing tactics. 👉 Networking: growing your professional network and building corporate and industry relations. We also discussed a common aspiration among students from developing countries – migrating to Europe, the US, or Australia for higher education. Many students lack the necessary awareness and information, a gap that needs to be solved with transparency and strong relationships with universities, schools and students. I am thrilled to announce that Regina Julia Nurhakim, Rezha Z. Edmanda, Bella Damarwati Iriyanto and I are currently developing and preparing the Model United Nations for HI UMY 2024 as part of the International Conferences Class in Hubungan Internasional Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta! Reflecting on past years, we recognized the students' challenge in understanding the dynamics of international forums and the delegates' perspectives during the Model United Nations. We believe this challenge often stems from a lack of groundwork in shaping students' perceptions during preparatory classes. Therefore, we collectively agree that the build-up for the Model United Nations of HI UMY 2024 will focus on enhancing students' abilities to grasp the technicalities and dynamics of international forums, particularly through our preparation in the International Conferences class. Additionally, we emphasize the influence of neo-realism and neo-liberalism thoughts during the preparatory phase, as we believe these major thoughts in International Relations play a crucial role in shaping the dynamics of international forums. We also plan to hold the Model United Nations session twice. The first one will be simulations, while the second session will be the main event. Thorough this preparation, we believe the Model United Nations will unfold as planned, shaping dynamic discussions and outcomes. We have finalized the grand theme and council for this year's MUN. I Didn't WIN, But Still WON. How ? The Annual Debate Competition 2024 was recently conducted in my college and as results were in, I didn't win. But it made me realize sometimes failures brings within them hidden victories. Here's How - 👉 Made it to the Finals (Top 16)! Reaching this stage was a huge accomplishment, especially considering the strong competition. 👉 Conquered Stage Fear: Debating the motion "India Should Mend Fences with Maldives" in the quarterfinals pushed me way outside my comfort zone. But guess what? I survived - and thrived! 👉 Learned From All Sides: Speaking for and against different motions (Meitei Scheduled Tribe status and mandatory live-in registration) broadened my research skills and critical thinking. 👉 Open Minded Research: I learned the importance of approaching research with an open mind, considering all viewpoints to build a strong argument. Recognizing my mistakes fueled my determination to improve for the next challenge. The skills and experiences I gained are worth more than gold. The 2nd International Conference on Go Studies 2024 (Cont.) Let me introduce Dr Silvia Lozeva. She is the founder and Director of the Institute 361 with an academic background in strategy, diplomacy, and organisational culture. Dr. Lozeva has over ten years of experience in the academic sector, including economics and organisational development, coupled with government and industry experience. She is also a TEDxPerth speaker from 2019 who spoke about harnessing the lessons of the game of Go. Given her expertise, it's an honor to have her at our conference, especially as she is located far away in Australia. Below you can find the abstract of her presentation. Theory and Practice of Go Promotion: A Strategic Framework for Community and Business Engagement in Australia Abstract: Promoting the game of Go in Australia requires a strategic framework to navigate challenges and leverage opportunities across community, educational, and business settings. This presentation introduces the Go Promotion Framework (GPF), combining theoretical approaches with practical applications. The GPF framework consists of four pillars: Accessibility, Inclusivity, Engagement, and Integration. Accessibility: Choosing venues near public transport with ample parking facilitates participant attendance. Inclusivity: Local facilitators fluent in Mandarin create a welcoming atmosphere. Structured curricula progressively build participants' skills and knowledge. Engagement: Co-promotion with libraries and visually appealing posters significantly increases awareness and participation. Diverse participants from various backgrounds enrich the experience. Integration: Exposure and networking outside the Go community are crucial. Presenting at conferences like the Data Cloud and Storage convention and the Mining conference has led to collaborations with mainstream businesses. A key component was the "Go Strategic Play" workshop, a half-day session that gamified strategic thinking for business professionals. This workshop demonstrated how Go's principles could be applied to enhance strategic decision-making in the corporate world. Organising multilingually: setting an agenda for studying language at work. European Journal of International Management, 12(1-2), 8-27. This paper brings together International Business (IB) and sociolinguistic research on the use of language in multilingual organisations and organising. We problematise core categories and underlying assumptions that have been adopted in this field of research to argue for a holistic and context sensitive approach. Special attention is paid to the notions of national language and multinational organisation. Scholars have started to argue for new ways of researching language in organisations and to call for more processually oriented categories and meanings such as organising and languaging. Current core categories such as monolingual/multilingual, small/large and national/multinational often remain static, structural and binary, and are not aligned with the fluidity and change of human activity or with the promise of the broader linguistic and discursive turns in social sciences. In the literature review for the #PADMICA project, we aim to introduce relevant literature on the adaptation of international students and intercultural competence. Based on the literature, we argued for the necessity of deliberate and planned development of intercultural competence and the critical, guided reflection on experiences gained during study abroad. Time has passed since the announcement of Indonesian International Student Mobility Awards' selected awardees (Kementrian Pendidikan dan Kebudayaan's program). It’s still unbelievable that I will be studying on another country for 6 months. There were a lot of anxieties, hopes, and expectations in the selection process. Here are things that I learned from that period: 📈 Good Things Take Time: Throughout the whole journey, from writing the essay, preparing administration documents, and taking part in the interview, it hit me how the work that I put in is not instant. I learned how important it is to be consistent, patient, and keep a positive attitude throughout the months! 👬 Supportive Peers: There were a lot of people who helped me throughout the process, family, friends, and even alumni. They helped me see things I couldn’t see. I am not alone in my efforts to seize this opportunity. Be kind, curious, and inquisitive, then give back to the people around you! 🤷♂️ Vanquish Your Self-Doubt: While waiting for the results, I was pessimistic. Nobody truly knows your value, not even yourself. Don’t sell yourself short! Failure from an attempt is more honorable than not trying at all. Truly give it your all and let the world give back to you. Learn from your feedbacks and maximize your potentials—skills that only you have! Now, I am excited to continue my journey towards Lomonosov Moscow State University (MSU) (Московский Государственный Университет им. М.В. Ломоносова (МГУ)) over at Moscow! I am sure that I will learn even more things over there on the other side of the world. To anybody currently or planning to go through any scholarship progress, keep going and believe in yourself! Last week, I had an opportunity to join Ulysseus European University Multilingualism and Intercultural Competences BIP at Haaga-Helia University of Applied Sciences Porvoo campus, to learn about culture and cultural intelligence from Haaga-Helia’s Senior Lecturer Kevin Gore. For me personally, the main message of the day was that cultural intelligence is not given, and the ability to apply learned knowledge is priceless. For instance, during the day, I had the chance to enhance my knowledge gained from a previous BIP on Effective Teamwork at the Karel de Grote-Hogeschool in Antwerp, Belgium, and knowledge gained during my bachelor thesis writing process. In the spirit of developing ourselves as international communicators, here are a few ways to do that based on the lectures: ✅ 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝘆 𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗻-𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗱. Cultural intelligence is a result of constant practice and exposing ourselves to new experiences. ✅ 𝗚𝗲𝘁 𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗳𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝘇𝗼𝗻𝗲. The success of cultural diversity has a lot to do with people’s comfort levels in integrating different cultures. Embracing diversity means adapting our values and behaviours, hence sometimes we also have to see beyond the characteristics of the different culture that are deemed ‘acceptable’ in our own culture. ✅ 𝗕𝗲 𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗱𝗼𝗻'𝘁 𝗯𝗲 𝗮𝗳𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗳𝗮𝗶𝗹. During international communication conflicts are natural, and possessing knowledge of intercultural communication, does not help to prevent conflicts from happening, but it lessens the impact of them.
