The recent blocking of VPNs in Pakistan is creating immense challenges for freelancers trying to earn an honest living. In a country where opportunities for self-employment are already limited, such actions only make things harder for those striving to support themselves and contribute to the economy. Freelancers are frustrated and disheartened. If this continues, many may be forced to leave the country in search of better opportunities, or they may join the growing movements expressing public dissatisfaction. The government needs to recognize the struggles of freelancers and take immediate steps to support, not hinder, their efforts. It’s time to prioritize solutions, not create obstacles. #Pakistan

Gig Economy and Worker Classification The gig economy, with short-term contracts and freelance work, challenges employment law, particularly worker classification. Understanding these distinctions is crucial for protecting worker rights in Nigeria. Classification Differences: Employees receive stable wages, benefits, and legal protections. Independent Contractors have flexibility but lack benefits and protections. Real-Life Example: - A Bolt driver in Nigeria classified as an employee would get stable pay and benefits. As an independent contractor, they have flexibility but face economic insecurity. Legal Implications: - Misclassification can lead to legal issues and penalties for companies. - Workers may experience instability and lack of benefits. #GigEconomy #WorkerRights #EmploymentLaw #LaborLaw #FairWork

There are approximately 1.2 million gig workers in Kenya at the moment, 82% of whom work in the informal sector. They make up a large part of Kenya’s growing and thriving digital economy. However, the sector faces challenges, including legal uncertainty for job providers and lack of worker protections. There is an urgent need for an appropriate regulatory framework to increase investment support and balance it with workers' rights. How do we ensure that all stakeholders are able to take advantage of the opportunities in the sector, and promote fair, dignified work for gig workers? We found that an agile, responsive and future-thinking approach to regulation is required. One that understands the sector in the context of its global economy and dynamics and anticipates future changes. We collaborated with the Mastercard Foundation, eMobilis Technology Training Institute and Ajira Digital Program and created an innovative policy proposal that can lead Kenya into the emerging future 🌟 Download it here 👉 https://lnkd.in/dppc74sF #PolicyInnovation #SystemsChange #CollaborativeGovernance #FutureOfWork Cc Kenya Private Sector Alliance (KEPSA)

Recently, my experience with ride-hailing services in Lagos and Abuja has been frustrating. For every ride, drivers insisted on negotiating fees outside the app’s standard pricing, citing rising fuel costs, car maintenance, and economic challenges. They feel that platforms haven’t updated rates to reflect these realities, leaving them with insufficient earnings after commissions. This highlights why #Fairwork is critical. Research from Fairwork Nigeria emphasizes the challenges platform workers face, with gig platforms often failing to provide fair pay and protections. (You can read about the Fairwork Nigeria Project here - https://lnkd.in/edvfbBsV). The Fairwork principles offer a solution for transparency, fair pay, and better working conditions. In our recent publication, "Beyond Profit: Navigating Fairness in Lagos Gig Work", published in Humanistic Management in the Gig Economy (Palgrave Macmillan), we explored these issues, citing worker's perspectives, experiences, and the complexities of their work. You can access the book chapter here -https://lnkd.in/eMK69VfG The bargaining practices introduced by drivers erode trust and highlight the need for urgent platform reforms. Ride-hailing services must revisit their pricing models to ensure fairness for drivers while maintaining quality service for consumers. Only through Fairwork principles can we build a more sustainable future for gig workers, especially as the gig economy emerges as a solution to unemployment and poverty, thanks to its accessible entry points, minimal infrastructure investment, and flexibility. Special thanks to my co-authors Kemi Ogunyemi, Chiwe MAMA, Amaka Anozie, Ronke Ojesebholo, Oluwatosin Onayemi #Fairwork #Nigeria #GigEconomy #RideHailing #WorkerRights #SustainableWork #FairPay

Freelancers in Pakistan and Peshawar in particular are facing significant challenges due to the suspension of mobile services and slow internet speeds. Their projects for freelancers working on international assignments have come to a standstill, severely affecting their livelihoods. For weeks, people across Pakistan have been grappling with mental stress caused by sluggish internet speeds. Waleed Paracha, the digital expert in Peshawar, estimates that these network disruptions have impacted around 70% of employment in the region. Many young freelancers from Peshawar are reporting that their client base is shrinking daily as a direct result of internet outages. The situation has made it difficult for them to meet project deadlines, risking long-term relationships with international clients. Experts warn that the slow internet could result in millions of dollars in economic losses and urged the government to take immediate action to resolve the problem. #Frequent #internet #suspensions #Pakistan #frustrate #freelancers #Israel #North #247newaupdate

As a migrant, I wish I understood employment rights when I moved here. I had no idea and never realised it was so different to what I was used to in The Netherlands. Therefore, I can only support initiatives like this. However, I do think that all of the employees would benefit from some form of education on their rights. Because there is a massive gap to fill there.
