HHS Region 10 hosted OPA for a community discussion on Take Action for Adolescents: A Call to Action for Adolescent Health and Well-Being. Representatives of state and local health care providers and youth-serving organizations joined this community dialogue to emphasize a commitment to supporting young people. They discussed how policies and practices can make it difficult to coordinate efforts and identified mental health as one of the biggest challenges facing young people today. Participants shared: - Ways that their organizations could promote adolescent health and well-being; - The expertise and resources they bring to that effort; - Groups or organizations they want to partner with; and - Perspectives that have historically been missing from the conversation. Do the math. In Texas, 246 out of 254 counties are facing a shortage of licensed mental health professionals. While I am excited to see our statewide improvements in telehealth platforms (especially the expansion of TCHATT), realistically there are not enough licensed mental health professionals available to meet the demand. And there won't be anytime soon. At Lucero, we have a plan. We created an innovative and scalable solution to address this mental health crisis. On our digital platform, we offer subclinical 24/7 care for youth ages 8 and up, and we provide PARENTS with the tools and strategies to support their families. If there are not enough therapists, let's build the capacity of caregivers to better support their kids. #MentalHealth #Innovation #Lucero #PopulationHealth (Source: https://lnkd.in/gWEQQKHa)

Survivor of Medical Gaslighting | Seen on the Tamron Hall Show | Thought-Provoking Public Speaker and Solution Based Advocate Addressing Racial Disparities | CEO of Mone’s Healthy Eats
I occasionally receive messages like these, but they don't bother me. I understand that some people may not have access to support groups or may have limited comprehension. I chose to share my story on my platforms because it's presented in a simplified way, from the perspective of a patient dealing with chronic illnesses and the mental health struggles that come from chronic pain and medical gaslighting. If it helps even one person, that’s enough for me. Storytelling is a powerful way to improve health literacy, empower others, and raise awareness and advocacy. #ChronicIllness #InvisibleIllness #Endometriosis #Lupus #HealthLiteracy #MentalIllnessAwarenessWeek #MentalHealtgAwareness #HealthJournalists #Doctors

The narrative around Black women is literally killing us. Q: Do Black women feel pain during childbirth? A: Yes, we do. Q: Should Black women be allowed to become anxious, frustrated or even angry during labour 'pains'? A:Yes, we should. Q: Are we allowed to call for help, pain relief or medical support during labour? A: Without a doubt. Can you believe that in this day and age, perceptions and narratives about Black women and pain still persist? A report published in the US in 2016, found that about 50 percent of medical students and residents attribute higher pain tolerance to Black patients compared to white patients. These students falsely believed Black people have less sensitive nerve endings, thicker skin, or stronger immune systems so therefore would require less invasive pain care than white people. As a result, residents and medical students “made less accurate treatment recommendations” for Black patients. Hundreds of years after the ending of enslavement of African people, these racist notions still persist. Could this be a reason for the unacceptably high number of deaths of Black women and babies in childbirth? That is why it is imperative to challenge, ask questions, demand and if necessary be angry - our lives depend on it. Our latest research highlights the significant barriers that low-income families face in accessing specialized mental health services for children and adolescents, despite Australia's promise of universal health coverage. We found that children from low-income families are less likely to receive psychological therapy for anxiety and depression, primarily due to high out-of-pocket costs for clinical psychologists. This demonstrates how financial obstacles can prevent children from receiving the care they need, further widening the socioeconomic gap. This underscores the urgent need for policy interventions to remove financial barriers and ensure equitable mental healthcare access for all children. In 2008, the U.S. named July as National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month, yet more than 20% of adults continue to live with mental illness— many of whom not getting the care they need. Lack of treatment for mental health challenges can stem from a variety of factors, including lack of access to adequate healthcare specifically for underrepresented communities. So, how can we bridge the racial health gap? Three experts in the healthcare industry Nora Triola, Ph.D., R.N., N.E.A.-B.C., David Cade, and Julie KennedyOehlert weighed in on the discussion, sharing how organizations and individual service providers can improve health outcomes in underserved communities. Recommendations included: Nurturing diverse healthcare providers Establishing new ways of listening Speaking up in healthcare conversations Fixing structural barriers to healthcare For additional information about these recommendations, check out the full article linked in the comments below. #MentalHealthAwareness #NationalMinorityMentalHealthAwarenessMonth #HealthcareEquity

💡 Speaker Spotlight 💡 (5 CEs) | Virtual | Oct. 5 | Session Title: The Reciprocal Effects of Attachment and PMADs Abstract: Perinatal and Infant mental health outcomes are recognized as intertwined; however, discussions about one frequently only briefly mention the other. The available research suggests that the bond between a new parent and infant are drastically impacted by one another. PMADs are considered to have detrimental effects on infants' formation of their attachment with their primary caregivers. Conversely, positive interactions with their baby have shown to have regulatory effects on caregivers suffering from PMADs. Further, as more positive interactions occur, they build on establishing a secure attachment. As we, as providers, use attachment to both identify and intervene with PMADs, we have a chance at reducing the unwanted or harmful effects that PMADs can have on the entire family system. #SpeakerSpotlight #AttachmentTheory #PMADs #PerinatalMentalHealth #InfantMentalHealth #SecureAttachment #ParentInfantBonding #FamilyWellness #MentalHealthSupport #PerinatalCare #PositiveParenting #CaregiverSupport #MentalHealthOutcomes #AttachmentAndMentalHealth #FamilySystem https://lnkd.in/g7KUDwkP
