Introducing Work Package 1: Project Management! We are starting our journey into the depths of our project, ODE4HERA, by presenting Work Package 1 (WP1): Project Management. WP1 serves as the backbone of our project, responsible for coordinating, monitoring, and implementing the necessary measures to achieve ODE4HERA's technical objectives on time, within budget, and according to high-quality standards. This includes overseeing all budgetary actions, ensuring effective distribution of funds to partners, and tracking of expenditures, all in adherence to the rules and regulations established under Horizon Europe. But that's not all - WP1 goes beyond project management. It establishes the impact monitoring strategy, aligning with CAJU guidelines and coordinates the cooperation between ODE4HERA and other research efforts. The DLR Institute of System Architectures in Aeronautics leads work package 1. Their mission is to develop methods, processes, and tools to accelerate the digital development of complex aeronautical products leveraging Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) and Multidisciplinary Design and Optimization (MDO). The expertise of the DLR Institute of System Architecting in Aeronautics extends to project coordination, as demonstrated by their leadership in European-funded research initiatives such as Horizon 2020 AGILE and AGILE 4.0. Leading WP1 is Francesco Torrigiani, our project coordinator and research engineer at the DLR Institute of System Architectures in Aeronautics in Hamburg. After graduating at the University of Pisa with a thesis on variational analysis methods, Francesco began his journey at DLR in 2017. At the DLR Institute of System Architecting in Aeronautics, he immersed himself in MDO, contributing to the success of Horizon 2020, AGILE project (https://lnkd.in/e-kV2c-7) Francesco's current research focuses on MBSE Architectural Frameworks tailored to the needs of hybrid-electric aeronautical systems. During this summer I decided to explore the world of art and see its similarities to engineering and project management. For me the art has an special feature where you embrace the journey, creating something amazing despite your strokes went wrong on canvas, and getting inspiration from nature. Unlike engineering projects with the defined goal, I think in art, the journey is just as important as the destination. Infact the journey itself influences the final outcome which can be way beyond the initial thought.

There is an idea in project management across many industries differentiating between the idea of "Done" and "Done Done". Done is often characterized as something like "Ready for Customers to Use". Done Done is often characterized as "Feature flags removed, dead-code cleaned up, as-builts updated, etc.". IMHO this is a fine distinction however too often pressure to ship deprioritizes getting to done done. This leaves dangling chad that inevitably results in sub-standard outcomes for customers and slows down the team. Buzzing to announce that I've earned my professional certificate from Delft University of Technology after successfully completing the course "Engineering Project Management: Mastering Project Complexity" as an initiative towards my continuous professional development. Throughout this online program, I delved into advanced project management methodologies, honing my skills in navigating through challenging complexities, performing project complexity assessments using the TOE framework and developing complexity footprints. I learnt new innovative approaches to make timely actions to tackle these project complexities focussed upon front-end development and teamwork as catalysts for success! Balancing work commitments with dedicated study time wasn't a walk in the park, however, by prioritising tasks and leveraging spare moments, I not only met all the assignment and quiz deadlines but exceeded my own expectations. Collaborating with teammates from diverse cultural and engineering backgrounds on discussion forums worldwide was a highlight, as we exchanged insights and potential engineering solutions, enriching the overall learning experience. I'm grateful to the professors Marcel Hertogh, Hans Bakker and Marian Bosch-Rekveldt for their guidance, support and encouragement along the way and am looking forward to further apply my advanced project management knowledge and the soft skills acquired to real-world projects.
