Apprenticeships: Opportunities for All Ages! Recently, I spoke with a mature individual who was eager to find an apprenticeship as a pathway to a new career. Despite their enthusiasm and readiness to learn, they had faced several rejections, with age being addressed as a barrier, by employers and a training provider. This brief conversation reinforced a belief I hold strongly: it's important to remember that apprenticeships are accessible to everyone, regardless of age. For mature individuals, apprenticeships offer: ✅ A structured way to gain new skills and qualifications. ✅ A chance to pivot into fresh career paths. ✅ An opportunity to bring valuable life and work experience into their learning and workplaces. For employers, hiring mature apprentices means: ✅ Access to highly motivated individuals with transferable skills. ✅ Enhanced team dynamics through diverse perspectives. ✅ A workforce committed to lifelong learning and professional growth. It’s time we challenge the stigma around apprenticeships being “only for young people” and embrace the value that learners of all ages bring to the table. I'M EXCITED 🍾 ...To see what the future landscape looks like for #trainingandeduction for the #eventsindustry. Following my talk at AEME (Association for Events Management Education) on Wednesday and the subsequent #newgovernment now in position, it's encouraging to know #apprenticeships are high on the agenda. Kerrin MacPhie commented in a the M&IT Magazine, "With less than half (47 per cent) of the sector currently employing apprentices according to our MIA Insights, we support Labour’s intention to create a new ‘growth and skills levy’. This fresh approach will allow operators greater flexibility to use up to 50 per cent of their levy contributions to fund training through alternative routes to support the exact training that is required to help the sector thrive." This is a significant shift and one that Events Apprenticeships is fully supportive of. But, we need to move the dial from 47% to 100% of the industry taking on apprentices and now is the time to do that.
