Looking ahead to Junior Achievement of Northern California's Entrepreneurship Summit next week, I better give some thought to what my opening remarks will be to an auditorium full of ambitious high school students. Here goes: How often have you been told that “life’s not fair!” I would estimate that 90% of us have heard that cliché from our parents, mostly as a way to cope with life’s disappointments. But is that saying really true?? Is life demonstrably unfair for 90% of us… or from another angle, do situations feel unfair 90% of the time? In the end, I think we all wish to believe that life is fair… and that is why we so often rely on Karma as our universal settler of scores. Did that litterbug finally get fined? Did that lazy coworker finally get demoted? Did that bully who picked-on people all through high school finally get a taste of the same medicine? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Well that, my fellow entrepreneurs, is how our fintech startup got its name. As the name suggests, we live at the intersection of KARMa and EQuity, endeavoring to restore a sense of economic “fairness” in America. Technically, KARMEQ is a broker/dealer investing platform that uniquely enables stocks as gifts – on a mission to close the Wealth Gap and inspire financial independence for future generations. What would be the name your startup? And why? #Entrepreneurs #Startups #Branding #FinTech #KARMEQ.com
Proud to support next week's Entrepreneurship Summit, hosted by Junior Achievement of Northern California. Thanks to their Executive Director and thought leader for corporate, community and educational partnerships, Ruby Damian, for inviting Karmeq to participate. This annual event to spark and celebrate business-building will bring together over 100 high school students from the Mountain View-Los Altos Union High School District. Internship ✔️ It has been a pleasure to complete my internship at Obu with Sarah King as my incredible mentor. Being able to work directly with Sarah as the CEO of Obu has provided an incredible insight into the world of angel investing. Key takeaways: 📝 Prioritisation. Operating a business often involves many ideas and ongoing projects. However, it is important to prioritise what is currently important for the business. 📝 Learn to enjoy the process of idea to implementation. 📝 Write down all your ideas. It may be THE idea or it may lead to another interesting idea💡 Plenty of exciting updates to expect from Obu! Follow Obu to stay updated. #entrepreneurship #phd

Usually, the weakest part of a pitch deck is the competition slide. Most founders pitching struggle to communicate how their startup differs from the competition. As someone who’s internship is focused on understanding the competition and developing strategic recommendations - I get it. Explaining your startup’s differentiation against competitors to investors is *hard*. There’s generally not a lot of information out there, and if there is, it’s in bits and pieces. I’ve been spending a lot of time doing this work myself. There are three areas, or buckets, that I organize information I collect to triangulate my understanding of the competition. I’ll share more on this tomorrow.

Exciting news! I've been accepted into Shufords Summer Away Program in Prague, Czech Republic. During my time in Prague, I'll be taking ECON 393: Practicum in Entrepreneurship and PR/IBUS 347: Entrepreneurship in Europe - Case Study: The Czech Republic, as well as gaining insight into business on a global scale through an internship. This opportunity will be a foundational experience for me to grow not only as a student but as a person. This February we said a fond farewell to our intern who really became part of the BACKED Clan, Noé Glibert. 😎 In the second instalment of our #HumansofBackedVC series, we hear Noé’s reflections about his four months experience of venture capital during his Marketing & Investment Winter Internship with us. Noé shared: ”As my internship chapter concludes, now is the perfect time to reflect on my 4 months journey and my transformation from new recruit to a member of the BACKED Family.⚡ ”Coming from the Belgian countryside and stepping into London, younger Noé would not believe the quality of the experience he was about to have. Both professionally and personally, BACKED brought me what every intern would dream of. Who would have thought that this internship could make such a difference for both me and the company? I entered as a neophyte and emerged as a valuable contributor, armed with a toolbox of skills and a mindset shaped by the challenges I faced. “Engaging in event coordination and spearheading the organisation of the #FutureOfGaming conference in Helsinki during Slush 2023, alongside esteemed cohosts such as Piers Kicks from Delphi Digital and Eleanor Hudson from Fabric Ventures, proved to be an invaluable professional journey. The experience not only afforded me the privilege of connecting with prominent figures in the web 3 gaming industry, including Justin Glibert and Hilmar Veigar Pétursson but also witnessing them on stage! 👾 “Looking back at my first days at #BACKEDVC, these months have been instrumental in refining my event management proficiency, program design capabilities, and speaker coordination skills. Additionally, collaborating with the investment team during various meetings and analyses was both exciting and instructive - Yasmin Siraj, Henry Ang and David Linsey. “Being shaped by BACKED’s human centric ethos about people, camaraderie and truth is something I will carry with me. I would like to thank all the people involved who made this possible. Here's to the end of one chapter and the thrilling beginning of the next!” --- With thanks to Noé and we wish him luck for his final stage of University and are sure our paths shall cross again! #VentureCapital #teamworkmakesthedreamwork #MemeKing 😉

Executive Director, Rutgers Global Sports Business, Assistant Professor of Practice, Communication, Rutgers University School of Communication, Author, TEDx Speaker, Keynote Speaker, Integrated Marketing Communication
#NationalInternDay On this National Intern Day, very best wishes for success and transformation to all #interns including my current #GenZ Rutgers University School of Communication and Information students who are interning this summer at agencies, corporations, brands, nonprofits, small businesses, startups and organizations of all types and sizes. In my first book that I authored, 101 Lessons They Never Taught You In College, that was inspired by my Rutgers University students, I shared this advice. "You can never have too much experience. Once you get your first taste of experience - start pursuing work experience that is relevant to the industry you would like to find a fulltime job in. Along the way, expand your professional network any time you can." https://lnkd.in/giRWUzaX
