Don't get me wrong, #representationmatters. But women don't need their faces on quarters, they need more quarters. According to the National Women's Law Center, Latina women earn 57 cents for every dollar paid to white, non-Hispanic men. This #paygap amounts to a loss of $1,218,000 over a 40-year career. $1,218,000?! That's 4,822,000 quarters. And, of course, the pay gap widens the #wealthgap and #investmentgap. A 2017 study by Senior Fellow of the The Aspen Institute Heather McCulloch found the average Latina's net worth is less than 1% of the average white man's. I love what the Smithsonian American Women's History Museum is doing. But let's couple these efforts with raising awareness, fighting bias, and creating policy so that women, specifically women of color, can see themselves on their currency...and have enough of that currency. Now, THAT is something that would make Celia Cruz dance. For more than one-and-a-half centuries, the Juneteenth holiday has been sacred to many Black communities. It marks the day in 1865 enslaved people in Galveston, Texas found out they had been freed — after the end of the Civil War, and two years after President Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation. Since it was designated a federal holiday in 2021, Juneteenth has become more universally recognized beyond Black America.
