In a surprising move that blurs the finance and commerce, JPMorgan Chase and Revolut are both entering digital advertising. Chase Media Solutions and Revolut Media Solutions aim to monetize their vast user data by offering targeted advertising opportunities to merchants and brands. While some experts see this as a natural extension of the "retail media network" trend, others question the impact on customer experience and privacy. As Rupak Ghose, an analyst and advisor, points out, "Will you be happy with targeted adverts leveraging your personal finances?" "Everything today is an ad network, but consumer attention is finite," warns Eric Seufert, an independent analyst and investor. "At some point, the finite nature of consumer attention constrains the size of the retail media space." Consumer sentiment towards advertising in financial apps remains a key concern. A recent study by Integral Ad Science found that only 12% of U.S. consumers were receptive to advertising when visiting financial websites – the lowest among all categories surveyed. Despite these challenges, the move by Chase and Revolut signals a growing trend of financial institutions exploring new revenue streams in the digital age. As the lines between banking and commerce continue to blur, the industry will be watching closely to see if these media solutions can deliver on their promise without compromising customer trust.
