Cardiogenic shock (CS) is characterized by low cardiac output and sustained tissue hypoperfusion that may result in end-organ dysfunction and death. CS is associated with high short-term mortality, and its management remains challenging despite recent advances in therapeutic options. Timely diagnosis and multidisciplinary team-based management have demonstrated favourable effects on outcomes. We aimed to review evidence-based practices for managing patients with ischemic and non-ischemic CS, detailing the multi-organ supports needed in this critically ill patient population.

Dear Colleagues, Interesting findings from a recent study published in Medical Science Monitor shed light on the early identification of acute kidney injury in severely injured patients. The study found that admission levels of HMGB-1, NGAL, creatinine, and myoglobin can predict the risk of acute kidney injury. These biomarkers were significantly higher in acute kidney injury patients compared to non-acute kidney injury patients. This findings could change the way we manage trauma patients, enabling timely intervention and reducing morbidity and mortality rates. #MedicalResearch #AcuteKidneyInjury #TraumaCare #ClinicalFindings | https://lnkd.in/dSbCTx-e

"Unilateral Alveolar Hemorrhage: A Rare Pulmonary Complication in Systemic Lupus Erythematosus" In a recent case study published in Cureus, researchers Nolasco-Amezcua et al. highlight a rare pulmonary complication of SLE—unilateral alveolar hemorrhage. This condition, typically bilateral and with a poor prognosis, presented unilaterally in a patient undergoing hemodialysis for lupus nephropathy. 💡 The case underscores the need for thorough differential diagnosis and showcases clinical improvement following steroid treatment. Atrial Fibrillation as a Prognostic Factor for All-Cause Mortality in Patients With Transthyretin Amyloid Cardiomyopathy Ronald Witteles, MD, et al. https://lnkd.in/dsWFCCb3. JACC: CARDIOONCOLOGY, VOL. 6, NO. 4, 2024. AUGUST 2024:592–598. The study was analyzed post hoc. Tafamidis benefits patients with ATTR-CM (transthyretin amyloid cardiomyopathy) regardless of whether they have AF/AFL (71%), both in all-cause mortality, quality of life and functional capacity measures, especially with limited comparison variables such as functional class, LV EF and initial ECG (AF). This indicates that patient inclusion is more beneficial at earlier stages.
