The deal was announced Monday morning as the annual J.P. Morgan Healthcare Conference gets underway alongside two other acquisitions: Merck Group-Harpoon Therapeutics and Novartis-Calypso Biotech. As I predicted a few months back, the ADC market prospect is absolutely exploding. (Abbvie - Immunogen deal, https://lnkd.in/edyG2hW5), as triple acquisitions have been annouced in one morning today: First, J&J - Ambrx Second, Merck-Harpoon Third, Novartis-Calypso. The trio of acquisitions follows a deal-heavy December as the industry expects Big Pharma to start spending its trove of cash to shore up its pipelines as end-of-decade patent expirations loom. Besides, Merck, Bristol Myers, Roche, BioNTech and others have inked multiple licensing and collaboration deals to nab rights to ADCs.

We have closed our £26m Series B follow-on financing. The round was led by new #investor Panakes Partners, joined by our existing investors Versant Ventures, Novartis Venture Fund, Forbion, Epidarex Capital and IP Group plc. The #investment will fund the Phase 2a #clinical #proofofconcept trial in #cysticfibrosis for our lead programme, ETD001. With first-in-class potential, ETD001 targets the ENaC #ionchannel in the airway epithelium, increasing the hydration and clearance of mucus to drive substantial improvements in #lungfunction. Funds will also support the progression of our other #preclinical programmes targeting the underlying mechanisms of mucus congestion in chronic #respiratory diseases. After researching the largest companies attending J.P. Morgan, I was not shocked to see the golden ticket of ADCs rise to the top of the JPM most talked about! ADCs are antibody drug conjugates. So, why are ADCs taking over every big pharma portfolio and business deal right now? Because ADCs are specific for cancer antigens while not harming healthy cells, allowing them to have a better safety profile (Therefore they may be a safer investment for biotechs. Something biotech desperately needs right now.) Which companies are the largest players to watch? Merck signed a $22B deal with Daiichi Sankyo accounting for almost 35% of the total cash spent on ADC deals in 2023! CG Oncology is hoping for a $209m IPO, with more biotechs looking to hit public markets this year. Bladder cancer-focused CG started 2024 by outlining IPO plans, but no figures were offered at the time. Now, the biotech has said it is looking to sell 11.8 million shares at $16-18 a piece, bringing the total IPO value to around $181.1million. If the underwriters jump at the opportunity to snap up a further 1.7m shares, then the haul would rise to $209million.
