Going to a hiring fair? It’s guaranteed to be saturated, but you can make the most of it with this step-by-step game plan! 𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗽 𝟭: 𝗗𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗶𝗳 𝗶𝘁'𝘀 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗵 𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴. Look at the companies attending and their current job openings. Even if there's no immediate opening, if a company you're targeting is there, it's worth going. If there is nothing of interest to you - you’re day can be spent doing more productive tasks. 𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗽 𝟮: 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗲𝘀 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗼𝗼𝘁𝗵. Check LinkedIn for people working the booths. Look for company posts about the fair, see who likes them, and identify folks in talent acquisition, people coordination, or employee success. Connect with them before the event. 𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗽 𝟯: 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘃𝗶𝗮 𝗲𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗹. Contact those you've identified with an email like like: "Hi Sam, I noticed your company will be at the Toronto hiring fair next Wednesday. As the talent coordinator, will you be at the booth? I plan on going to learn more about the opportunities your company has open. Cheers!" This sets up a warm introduction for the day of the event. 𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗽 𝟰: 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁. Arrive an hour early. Have a resume printed for each job you’re interested in. At the top of each resume, handwrite the company name, the job title, and the job ID (if applicable). Get those resumes in the right hands! 𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗽 𝟱: 𝗕𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗰 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲. Focus on booths relevant to you. Ideally, you’ve connected with someone before the event – make sure to meet them! – If you read the above and thought, "That’s a decent strategy, but connecting with strangers like that is kinda creepy," you’re right, it can be. But here’s the thing, it’s all about how you approach it. Be genuine, professional, and pleasantly curious. People appreciate authenticity, and it can set you apart in a crowded environment.

Junior Civil Engineering Student in the Honors College at the University of Houston | Energy & Sustainability Minor
Hello! I am currently taking ENGI1304 - Technical Communication for Engineers at UH, and I would like to share a couple things I have learned. Over the past month, our primary focus has been making a memorable impression on recruiters at the Career Fair. This involves much more than a polished resume; it's about creating engaging conversations, having a simple and effective elevator pitch, writing thoughtful thank-you emails, and exuding confidence. This class has taught me that recruiters want to have a real conversation with you, they want to know you and your strengths. Confidence and enthusiasm play significant roles in these interactions, and both can be achieved through being comfortable discussing your achievements and capabilities. In class, we were assigned to watch a video about overcoming presentation fears. This video stood out to me because I think a lot of presentation techniques explained in the video overlap with how you speak to recruiters. For example, you must know the ins and outs of all the content you put on your resume and you must tailor it to suit whichever company you may be speaking to. This is something I practiced and effectively displayed at the Career Fair this past Wednesday, and I wouldn't have been as successful without the help of this class.

Hi everyone, Currently, I am taking ENGI2304 - Technical Communication for Engineers. Through this class, I have learned much about professionalism as an engineer. Specifically, I would like to focus on having a successful career fair experience. Although it is a common misconception that we should memorize and then recite our elevator pitch to recruiters in such a setting, this class has taught me that many, if not all industry representatives prefer a more natural conversation. Additionally, we learned that a good habit to develop for the career fair is to note down memorable points in your conversation with every recruiter. Therefore, when you send a follow-up email, you can include such details, helping you stand out amongst other candidates. Also, another great career fair tip I learned from Technical Communication is to be familiar with your resume; the last thing a recruiter wants to see is that you struggle to recall your own experiences. Lastly, being confident and proud of your accomplishments and identity truly speaks measures when trying to make a valuable first impression.

Great to see!!! More prep classes for ALL military are hopefully being developed too! Hiring (off-base) is much different than most service members realize, and you don’t have as big of a network anymore either. PSA: Please have your resume when attending ANY hiring event..do not show up in a hoodie and sweatpants (your uniform isn’t even a problem..you’re at work..we know that!)…come with some type of “elevator pitch” to let me know who you are and what your looking for..and finally have confidence in what you bring to the table (pun intended haha!). Reach out to a fellow Veteran (who’s been through one/two) for advice. Your military career took mentoring and so will your civilian one! #veteran #prepclass #veteranhiring
