This Pride Month, Audible's Pride Impact Group organized engaging events and initiatives to foster conversations and amplify LGBTQIA+ voices. We hosted a special Pride Social Hour where employees connected with the creators of "Sage the House Down," an Audible Original featured in our Pride collection. For the fifth consecutive year, Audible and our Pride Impact Group proudly marched in the NYC Pride Parade, joined by over 100 passionate employees celebrating diversity and inclusion. Can we start talking openly about actionable ways to increase representation? It’s a shared responsibility between all of us to get more diversity in front of AND behind the camera. I'm talking: • women • non-binary or gender-nonconforming • trans people and members of the LGBTQIA+ community • people of color • individuals with disabilities • different socioeconomic backgrounds As a white woman, my lived experience only gets me so far. When stories are rooted in race, ethnicity, culture, and the intersectional identities of a person, that's my chance to listen & learn. As a storyteller, I want to make sure that I’m empowering people and not tokenizing them. My short film Both & Neither (see the full film in an earlier post) has themes of racial and cultural identity. There was no road map to creating a film like this, but my north star was this: Honoring the subjects, Natalie and Ana. It pushed me to be deliberate in all my decisions, from the interview questions I asked to how I framed certain shots to why I pushed to keep a certain voiceover nugget in the final cut. I'm starting off Pride month by reading the stories of a fellow queer, working class writer. We need to hear/read the stories of more queer working class people—of all ethnicities. Queer people who went to state schools, trade schools, or dropped out college. Queer people who work in the service industry, as farmers, as sex workers, as performers, as activists, or the lowest rung of clerical work. Queer people who live in segregated cities or deprived rural areas. Queer people who are living experiences of struggle and success. Queer working class people are my inspiration.

🌈Happy Coming Out Day! 🌈 Storytime on how I was outed in the workplace 😢 💔 Today, we commemorate the bravery of the LGBTQIA+ community as they navigate the challenging path of coming out. It's important to remember that coming out is a personal journey, and no one has the right to out another person, regardless of the circumstances. A few years ago, when joining a new company, someone I didn't know, but who was connected to my friends, decided to share my sexual orientation with my future colleagues. Discovering this on my first days in the new role left me feeling insecure and worried about my professional development. It was disheartening that someone who didn't even know me felt entitled to share such a personal aspect of my life. I felt violated. Respecting everyone's journey to come out of the closet, regardless of our assumptions or knowledge, is crucial. We should recognize the multitude of emotions queer individuals experience, including fear and vulnerability. While outing someone might seem like it would make their lives easier, it is not our decision to make. Let's stand together, creating a culture of support and acceptance. By championing diversity, equity, and inclusion, we can build workplaces and communities where everyone feels safe and celebrated for who they are. Had a brilliant afternoon yesterday at the Outvertising Live conference! Not only were there some fabulous insights into queering the advertising industry, but it was so lovely to be in a room of like-minded LGBTQIA+ professionals. A few key takeaways I had: 🌈 Making the case for inclusive advertising doesn't have to rely on the morality argument. It's proven that well made ads aimed at queer people ALSO perform well with non-queer people. There is a 'diversity dividend.' 🌈 Having a good marketing strategy for the LGBTQIA+ community is more about the long term planning than any one individual campaign. If you're marketing to queer people they want authenticity and commitment, not ads that are style over substance. 🌈 We are not a homogeneous community. Whether it's the marketing campaigns that you run or the way you treat your queer employees, an understanding and respect for difference is key. Super excited to take this back to my team & clients to see how we can start implementing some of these!
