Ukraine is the first nation to have created a new military branch, the Unmanned Systems Forces of Ukraine. This is a pivotal moment akin to the creation of the world’s first air force, the Royal Air Force, formed on April 1, 1918, seven months before Britain’s victory in World War I. Ukraine’s use of drones is transforming warfare as fundamentally as airplanes once did. https://lnkd.in/eHH-3Ak2

Great article highlighting a significant change in warfare. The ongoing conflict in Ukraine echoes historical moments where advancements in technology and strategies led to pivotal shifts in warfare. Notable examples include the US Civil War with innovations like railroads, telegraphs, and balloons; WWI introducing aircraft and tanks; the Spanish Civil War integrating air power and war photography; and WWII with combined maneuver tactics, aircraft carriers, and industrial capacity. The $1M question: How can we overcome bureaucracy to expedite innovation, acquisitions, and agile maneuverability in preparation for future challenges?

South Korean defense officials reported that North Korea launched multiple cruise missiles toward the Yellow Sea early Wednesday morning. The range and other details of the missiles were not provided, and further analysis is being conducted with the US military. This is the first such launch since September, when North Korea test-launched two long-range strategic cruise missiles. The North's 5-year defense plan announced in 2021 includes the development of medium- and long-range cruise missiles, which are believed to be intended for use in potential contingencies on the Korean Peninsula. The US and South Korean forces have been on high alert for military activity by North Korea, following artillery shell firings and a ballistic missile launch earlier in the month. #AsiaRisk #NorthKorea #Japan Follow us for daily updates on risk and operations in Asia! https://lnkd.in/gZfKCaFM

North Korea conducts a successful ground jet test of a solid-fuel engine for a new intermediate hypersonic missile and states that it has set a timetable for completing the system's development. This test comes after recent military activities, including missile launches and firing drills involving multiple rocket launchers. The missile launches and other actions coincide with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken's visit to South Korea for a multinational gathering aimed at strengthening solidarity among democratic countries. #AsiaRisk #GeopoliticalConflictandDisputes #SouthKorea Follow us for daily updates on risk and operations in Asia! https://lnkd.in/gSrFkdcn

Russia has recently bolstered its formidable Kh-101 cruise missile, significantly enhancing its ground strike capabilities by nearly doubling its warhead size. Intelligence gathered from Ukraine’s military media, analyzing debris from recovered missiles, unveils a substantial augmentation to one of Russia’s most potent long-range strike assets. The Kh-101 stands as a cornerstone in the Russian Federation’s arsenal, renowned for its precision and versatility. With a length of 6 meters and the ability to carry either conventional or nuclear warheads, this missile operates at speeds ranging from 700 to 900 kilometers per hour, flying at low altitudes to elude enemy defenses. Its programmable flight paths grant it exceptional maneuverability over distances up to 3,000 kilometers, making it a staple in Moscow’s operations in conflict zones like Ukraine and Syria, alongside its Soviet-era predecessor, the Kh-55. The Kh-101/Kh-102 is a line of conventional and nuclear capable air-launched cruise missiles (ALCM) developed and deployed by Russia. The Kh-101 developed as a stealthy replacement for the Kh-55SM in the late 1990s, the Kh-101 has a conventional warhead and the Kh-102 is thermonuclear. The missile is equipped with an electro-optical system for correcting the flight trajectory and with a TV guidance system for terminal guidance. Its official range is 4,500 km or 3,000 km with a conventional payload. It is re-targetable. The missiles are expected to be accurate within 10–20 m CEP. They are expected to be in service in required numbers by 2023. The new missile complex has been successfully tested and in recent years put into series production to equip modernized Tu-160 and Tu-95MSM bombers. During the war in Ukraine, starting in January 2023, Russia made use of a Kh-101 air-launched version, that releases decoy flares in flight. #military #defense #defence #militaryleak https://lnkd.in/gv-fXCtQ

Admiral John Aquilino reported to the US Congress that China's military modernization efforts pose a larger threat to Taiwan through the deployment of guided missiles rather than aircraft carriers. Aquilino highlighted China's comprehensive military modernization program, including increased military spending, deployment of new fighter aircraft and warships, expansion of missile stockpiles, and focus on projecting power beyond the first island chain. Aquilino also noted China's rapid growth in satellite launches and nuclear arsenal, as well as the development of stealth bombers and long-range missile systems. #AsiaRisk #GeopoliticalConflictandDisputes #Taiwan Follow us for daily updates on risk and operations in Asia! https://lnkd.in/gbFdRdvA

Missiles and missile defense systems start as challenging technology problems to be solved, but ultimately become military capabilities to be fielded and political chess pieces to be used to reward and punish behavior on the international stage. The US has announced that it will start deploying long-range missiles to Germany. These missiles will include Tomahawk cruise missiles, SM-6s, and future hypersonic capabilities. The statement released (https://lnkd.in/e-pMmc4x) gives the reason for the deployment as a contribution to integrated European defense through NATO. Moscow is predictably concerned and has started preparing "countermeasures" (https://lnkd.in/eh9dfUhQ). Like so much of the Cold War, even if missiles are never fired, their impact can be great. #missile #missiledefense #us #germany #nato #tomahawk #sm6 #hypersonic https://lnkd.in/efK9CnDh

Ukrainian experts have uncovered evidence of Russian technological assistance in North Korean KN-23 missiles used against Ukraine. Analysis of missile debris revealed Russian rotary hood technology, steel types, and tungsten alloy in various components. This cooperation dates back to the Soviet era, with North Korean missiles like Hwasong-5 and Hwasong-7 being modified versions of Soviet designs. In the 1990s, Russia's Makeyev State Rocket Center collaborated with North Korea on a "space launch rocket'," resulting in the Hwasong-10 missile with a 3,500 km range. The US has sanctioned Russian companies for supporting North Korea's WMD program. Experts warn that this collaboration could lead to new theaters of military operations involving authoritarian regimes, potentially dispersing Western resources and consolidating a "new axis of evil."
