Mixed methods research really is the best! We interviewed 40 families from our Understanding America Study survey panel to learn more about how their students managed during the pandemic and how they are doing now, the third school year after the pandemic upended education. These conversations shed light on the reasons behind many of our previously published quantitative research findings, including why concerns about students' learning have remained low despite nationwide test results showing a state of crisis for our nations' students and schools. Dear Colleague, I am completing my doctoral studies at Youngstown State University. I am conducting a study to investigate teacher retention. I am inviting you to participate in a short online survey about your practices in the profession and your beliefs about your current administrator(s). If you agree to participate in this study, you will be asked to complete ten demographic questions that describe you, 42-item survey questions, and six selected response questions regarding your feelings about your future plans. The survey will take approximately 15-20 minutes to complete. Criteria to participate in the study: Participants must currently teach in a PreK-12 traditional public or community school in Ohio. Teachers can teach any subject. To the best of my ability, your answers in this study will be kept confidential. The online survey will not collect personal information like email addresses or computer IP addresses. Your answers will be sent to and stored on a password-protected link. No one, including myself, will know if you participated in the study. Please complete the survey on a computer with internet access. You may not benefit directly from the research, but by participating in the study, you will provide meaningful information regarding teacher beliefs. Your participation in the study is completely voluntary, and you can withdraw at any time. The online survey link will be open for three weeks. RMC’s qualitative research associate, Cynthia Juniper, presented findings from our Evaluating Services for Texas Opportunity Youth (ESTOY) project at the Texas Network of Youth Services (TNOYS) 41st annual conference held June 4-7, 2024, in Houston, Texas. The purpose of the ESTOY evaluation is to pursue a deeper understanding of the experience of opportunity youth whose needs were not met by the community’s traditional education systems. The qualitative research method for this evaluation employed a community-based research design to invite voices from the community to collaborate with researchers in the design of the study, an approach that depends upon the knowledge, insights, and experiences of the individuals who are the subject of a study to assist and guide researchers. The ESTOY evaluation engaged youth and young adults currently enrolled in workforce development services to guide the development of a survey tool to be completed by youth and young adults receiving workforce development services in four Texas communities: Austin, San Antonio, Dallas, and Houston.
