There has been a lot of great discussion about the value of college and the removal of degree requirements for jobs. This report from the National Association of Colleges and Employers highlights industry perspectives on this debate. From the study: “The top drivers for these conversations and policy changes are 1) focus on skills instead of the degree, 2) equity in recruiting, and 3) talent shortage. It is important to note that no employer reported a lack of confidence in the college degree was a driver. In fact, among those employers that did report that there have been discussions or policy changes about removing the college degree, the reasons guiding those decisions are a result of a focus on hiring for skills, not a belief that the college degree lacks value.” For some time, I've believed we expend too much energy on a student's "major" and not enough on the skills, knowledge, and abilities they gain from curricular and co-curricular experiences. We should focus on frequent reviews of our degree requirements (thought of as buckets for skills, knowledge, and abilities) alongside industry needs. This ensures alignment and the development of well-educated graduates capable of thriving in their first entry-level positions. https://lnkd.in/e6Tbge3a

Beyond exploring #career paths, #college students recognize that a degree alone is often not enough to land an interview in today's labor market. Just as #recruiters seek to stand out to candidates, students don’t want to just play the numbers game with applications. They want to spend time with organizations and roles that align with their #skills, values, and goals.
