Qantas has announced changes to its frequent flyer system, including increased earn rates, more reward seats, and higher points costs. The changes, to be rolled out over the next 12 months, will see up to one million more Classic Reward seats go on sale through the Flying Kangaroo’s international partner airlines. They come after last year’s introduction of “Classic Plus” made more reward seats available. https://bit.ly/4jETJqL

Qantas is making big changes to its frequent flyer program in a move that will increase the points needed for seat redemptions and raise the cost of carrier charges from August. As part of the changes, Qantas will add a million Classic Reward seats on partner airlines such as Finnair, Air France, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines and Iberia from later this year. Qantas frequent flyers will also have the opportunity to redeem points on seats with Hawaiian Airlines, which was previously part of Virgin Australia’s airline partner family.

Qantas seems to go from bad to badder in terms of customer 'service' (service is a big word and they need to earn it) and general governance. Since April launch of the overhauled frequent flyer program, to the new renamed Classic Rewards and Classic Plus, the much hyped more efficiency and seat availability and ease of access is yet to be seen or met. Qantas Staff: you guys are legends doing your best in conditions imposed upon you, not your fault...I've personally had awesome positive experiences interacting with Qantas people in domestic and international. You don't get the support you must have to achieve the goals and metrics set for you. My experience, however, interacting with Qantas FFP is still the same, from bad to badder (and I think will go to badderer...). Qantas should roll it back to the pre-COVID programs where it was user friendly, clear and not reliant on you having to contact the poorly equipped help-desk (if you are able to contact or find it!). Your experience? Positive or negative. For ref: https://lnkd.in/g7wZFxHJ

Flying for work is a real treat, thanks Qantas and QantasLink. Big increases on prices, increases in cancellations and a lot of time sitting on the runway. I have noticed this myself over the last three years, and it's nice to read similar findings in the Riotact (local news). With less and less competition in the air consumers get to pay more for less. 'The cost of flying to Melbourne from Canberra has soared by 54 per cent to $298. Despite jet fuel prices falling by 41 per cent in the 12 months to September 2024, domestic airfares have remained at similar levels for the same period' https://lnkd.in/gyhMMBsJ

Qantas is overhauling its loyalty program, and the updates are a mixed bag. Here’s what you need to know: ✅ Earn up to 25% more Qantas Points on domestic flights starting July 2025. ✅ One million extra reward seats—but mostly with partner airlines. ✅ Cheaper Jetstar Economy rewards on short routes and Business Class upgrades starting in 2026. ❌ Classic Rewards are getting more expensive, with higher points requirements for premium cabins 5-20% increase. ❌ Increase to the co-payment aka "surcharge" on some route. Example: on a return trip to London you can expect to pay an extra $350 which equates to 26.85% increase. ❌ Upgrades using points will also cost 10–20% more. While there are some wins, the rising costs for redemptions and upgrades may overshadow them, especially given the ongoing challenge of finding Classic Rewards on Qantas flights. Qantas opens Classic Plus rewards to domestic flights. Qantas Classic Plus Reward seats are more expensive than the traditional Classic Reward seats. Because the points needed are dynamically linked to the cash airfare pricing. The higher the cash price, the more points required. During a sale is the only time when Classic Plus could represent a deal. Overall, the 'price' of anything is in context with how many points you have and how quickly and how many you can earn. More info is described in the article.

Low-cost carrier Bonza recently entered voluntary administration, after it abruptly cancelled all its flights, leaving passengers stranded at airports in the Sunshine Coast, Gold Coast, Melbourne and Avalon. Shortly after, Virgin Australia and Qantas (along with its low-cost arm Jetstar Airways) offered to fly affected passengers to their destinations at no additional cost where seats are available. Qantas Frequent Flyer's biggest revamp in its 35-year history, Classic+, promises 20 million new rewards seats and at a cost to Qantas of Au$ 120 million. Citi believes only 10% to 20% of these seats will be redeemed and, hence, a lower cost to Qantas of $70m. UBS believes the impact of Classic+ will be immaterial to earnings and cash flow.
