“The real potential for military application of artificial intelligence is to empower our commanders — the men and women who lead our formations. And how do we bring the power of AI to bear to let them do three things: make more decisions, make better decisions and make faster decisions?” said Gen. James Rainey, Army Futures’ commanding general, at a recent Scale AI’s government summit. Rainey reflected on ways the military is adapting to the quickly evolving advantages and limitations posed by AI in modern warfare. “I don’t personally think we have a technology problem — I think we have a tech adoption problem,” he said. MILITARY AI TRUST ISSUES: The Pentagon is grappling with a significant trust deficit in its AI systems among military personnel. Despite advanced AI tools designed to enhance battlefield decisions, there's a notable lack of confidence from the troops meant to rely on them. Soldiers express concerns over AI's reliability and accuracy, particularly under the intense, unpredictable conditions of warfare. This skepticism extends to life-or-death decisions, where the stakes couldn't be higher.

🤺 Open AI Military Policy 🤺 • OpenAI changed its policy to allow military applications, removing the previous ban on "military and warfare" uses. • OpenAI says the change is for clarity and to allow beneficial national security uses, but it could open the door to military contracts. • OpenAI didn't deny it's open to military customers, suggesting it's exploring new business opportunities. • The question remains where the line is drawn between acceptable and unacceptable military uses of AI.
