Yesterday the Productivity Commission released its first review of the National Agreement on Closing the Gap. Key recommendations include: 1). Power needs to be shared, recognising the right that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have control over the decisions that affect their lives. 2). Recognise and support Indigenous data sovereignty. 3). Fundamentally rethink mainstream government systems and culture. 4). Implement stronger accountability. As an Indigenous designed, led, and owned platform, The Keeping Place is dedicated to Indigenous data sovereignty and Closing the Gap. Time to back something different - https://lnkd.in/gJZaMn3X
In the pursuit of justice and reconciliation, it's imperative to acknowledge the profound significance of Aboriginal Land Rights and Sovereignty. Indigenous communities, as the traditional custodians of their ancestral lands, hold a unique connection to Country. These rights, deeply rooted in culture and heritage, have been central to the struggle for recognition, self-determination, and the preservation of Indigenous knowledge. At The Keeping Place, we stand in solidarity with Indigenous communities, amplifying their voices and supporting their journey toward greater autonomy and sovereignty over their sacred lands. Together, we champion the cause of justice and the enduring legacy of Land Rights. 🔗 www.thekeepingplace.com #IndigenousLandRights #Sovereignty #CulturalHeritage #SelfDetermination #JusticeForAll

Today is National Indigenous Peoples Day, a day to honour the First Peoples of these lands and to uplift the stories and experiences of Indigenous communities. TREE recognizes the importance of understanding that we are all on stolen land and that it is a privilege to learn about Indigenous history and culture through the wisdom and knowledge of Indigenous Peoples. We are committed to continuing to learn and unlearn, to reflecting on our participation in colonialism, and to working to make the promise of truth and reconciliation real in our lifetime. Reconciliation is not an abstract concept. We all have the responsibility, especially those of us who are white settlers, to create real, lasting, tangible change that centers justice and healing for Indigenous Peoples. Land acknowledgements are just one small piece of this work. They do not exist in a past-tense or historical context; colonialism is a current and ongoing process. We aspire to actively pursue decolonization through building relationships, self-reflection, education, and action.

My assertion that the richness of land contributed to brutal colonization underscores the complex interplay between resource wealth and the dynamics of power, exploitation, and resistance. If lands had been less rich in resources, it is plausible to argue that the incentive for colonization would have been diminished, potentially leading to different historical trajectories for many Indigenous populations. The legacy of colonialism continues to affect former colonies today, as they grapple with the consequences of resource exploitation, economic dependency, and cultural disruption. Understanding this history is crucial for addressing contemporary issues related to development, governance, and social justice in resource-rich regions.

At the Indigenous Gathering Place Society, we understand the transformative power of stories told by those who own them. Indigenous voices must lead in narrating our own history and truths, which is why our mission is dedicated to amplifying these narratives and allowing them to guide our vision. As we envision the future of the Indigenous Gathering Place, we see it as a space where we foster learning and walk in parallel paths—honouring each other's journeys, building understanding, and restoring the harms of the past together. We firmly believe that non-Indigenous peoples and settler colonial organizations have a vital role to play in this process by embracing their roles to listen, learn, acknowledge, and actively engage in the reconciliation process. By stepping back and elevating the voices of Indigenous leadership in our storytelling, you not only honour these voices but also create a foundation for genuine understanding, restoration, and healing. #TruthandReconciliation #Restoration

Year in Review #1 | Truth Before Reconciliation | “Speaking the truth, always speaking the truth, carries a power and authority that cuts through the colonizers' constructs, their fictions, their classifications and false promises.” Leading up to National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, Bruce shared his thoughts on how Aboriginal rights have become a tool of colonialism. Check out Bruce’s full essay to learn more about the history and future of section 35 of the Constitution @ https://buff.ly/3NthrYj

The Green Party’s election slogan, "For a fairer, greener country," invokes a nostalgic era when pound notes were green, symbolizing a heritage linked to King Charles III. This heritage carries his word now as king, blending the past with present responsibilities. The slogan suggests a fair green agenda, yet questions arise about its alignment with the Church of England, led by the royal family, and its historical pagan associations. This manifesto raises the question: Is the Green Party's approach a radical change capable of transforming politics, or is it a nod to the idyllic vision of "green and pleasant lands" from "Jerusalem"? The slogan and its symbolism reflect a call for both environmental sustainability and social justice, aiming to merge tradition with innovation. The Green Party’s vision is progressive, advocating for a future that respects cultural identity while pushing for significant political and environmental reforms. Their agenda emphasizes the need for a balanced approach to change, integrating the values of heritage with modern sustainability goals. #GreenParty #FairerGreenerCountry #PoliticalChange #EnvironmentalSustainability #SocialJustice #UKPolitics #KingCharlesIII #HeritageAndModernity #GreenAgenda #SustainableFuture #PoliticalSymbolism #TraditionAndInnovation #CulturalIdentity #ProgressivePolicies
