We are excited to share the launch of the sixth edition of “Vichaar-Vimarsh: Just Transition Newsletter.” https://lnkd.in/geGnXHZr This unique edition highlights “Labour Informality in the Coal-Producing Geographies in India: Issues and Perspectives,” with a strong emphasis on a people-centered transition. 🌱 As we advance into a future driven by sustainable energy, it is essential to emphasise a strategy centered around people. This edition features valuable insights from top scholars and researchers on how to effectively support the most vulnerable populations, particularly informal workers in coal-dependent areas, during this transition. We are also pleased to share with you our pilot initiative to generate alternative livelihood choices for the women of Giridih, Jharkhand where 49 women were established as successful business entrepreneurs by forming them into Joint Liability Groups (JLGs) and providing them training on incense stick production, mop and wiper manufacturing etc. This was our attempt to test out what an inclusive, equitable transition should fructify as. 📚 This issue features articles on: ⭐ C J Joseph, All India Trade Union Congress discusses the origins of just transition and its relevance to India. ⭐Vaibhav Raaj, International Labour Organization connects climate action in India’s coal sector with the Decent Work Agenda. ⭐Itay Noy, PhD, from the UCL explores the livelihoods of informal coal workers in Jharkhand. ⭐Setu Pelz, now with the Australasian Centre for Corporate Responsibility (ACCR) examines coal’s impact on rural livelihoods in Jharkhand. ⭐Prosanto Pal and Kapil Thool, TERI - The Energy and Resources Institute provide insights into the energy transition in India’s steel sector. ⭐Abhishek Kumar, research scholar at the SOAS University of London navigates the complexities of just transition with a focus on South Africa. 🎉 Let's celebrate the world of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (#MSME)! The MSME sector in India employs over 100 million workers and is a major contributor to India's GDP and net exports. However, the industry is often engulfed with a lack of information and awareness, inefficient technologies, and excessive dependence on non-renewable sources of electricity. In order to achieve net zero, India must enhance the MSME sector through the adoption of energy-efficient technologies, digitalization for enhanced monitoring, and access to climate finance. 🌱 Transitioning to Clean Energy: Challenges in India 🔥 India is ambitious to enhance access to modern, secure, sustainable, and affordable energy and is making significant strides toward clean energy. However, the journey to quit coal isn't an easy shift. Let's delve into the critical issues associated with this transition: - Livelihood Impact:    - As coal plants phase out, workers in the coal industry face job losses. A just transition requires retraining and alternative employment opportunities for these workers. - Public Finances:    - Coal-fired power plants have been a significant revenue source for state governments. Their closure may strain public finances, affecting infrastructure development and social welfare programs. - Social and Physical Infrastructure:    - Coal mining and power plants are often located in rural areas. Their closure impacts local infrastructure, including roads and schools. Mitigating this impact requires strategic planning. - Repurposing Land and Resources:    - Abandoned coal mines and power plant sites need repurposing. Converting them into renewable energy parks, green spaces, or industrial zones can revitalize local economies. 🌟 India must balance its commitment to clean energy with ensuring a smooth transition. I am thrilled to share with my connections that I recently had the privilege of presenting my research paper titled, ‘Assessing India's Journey Towards Sustainable Energy Access - A Study on SDG 7: Gains, Gaps, and Strategies’ at the Indian Council of Social Sciences Research (ICSSR) Sponsored Two Days International Seminar on ‘Net Zero & Energy Transition for Sustainable Development. The conference was held on 17-18 February 2024 at the Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Petroleum Technology, organized by the Department of Management Studies. The conference aimed to highlight the issues related to achieving Net Zero by 2070 and identify ways to ensure a smoother energy transition. It was an honor to be among several authors who presented their ideas on the importance of energy access. Through a variety of studies, we discussed how new technologies could be implemented and how they would impact sustainable growth in India. Talking about one of the most critical SDGs, through my research paper I tried to answer how to ensure universal access to clean, affordable, and reliable energy. It talks about how achieving this goal is crucial for socio-economic development and has a significant impact on the lives of people, especially in India, where a large population lives in rural areas where the situation needs urgent attention. It was identified, as imperative for India to focus on supporting R&D efforts toward new technologies that enhance energy production, storage, and distribution, making sustainable energy generation not just accessible but also affordable, to deal with energy poverty. Initiatives based on Public-Private Partnerships are suggested to provide an enabling environment for investment. I am grateful for the opportunity to contribute to this important conversation and look forward to working in this area and continuing to work towards a more sustainable future for all. #sustainability #energytransition #netzero #research #India

I am pleased to share the report of the International Conference: ‘Sustainable Transition for Future-Ready Jharkhand’ held on 14-15 February 2024 in Ranchi. This significant gathering, organized by the Task Force on Sustainable Just Transition (Government of Jharkhand) and Centre for Environment and Energy Development (CEED), in collaboration with the Government of Japan, UNDP in India, and WRI India, gathered policymakers, industry leaders, and community representatives to discuss and plan Jharkhand's path towards a sustainable and resilient future. The conference was a critical milestone in Jharkhand's just transition journey, addressing the socio-economic challenges while steering the state towards a sustainable and resilient future. By bringing together diverse stakeholders, the event fostered innovative solutions and collaborative efforts, empowering local communities and charting a clear roadmap for sustainable energy transitions. This initiative has already led to a ₹36,238 crore investment in a green ammonia plant in Tamil Nadu. To maximize this opportunity, India should focus on mapping critical mineral supply chains, regularly updating critical mineral lists, and exploring non-traditional tech innovations.
