Last year Spectrum had the opportunity to contribute to the Australian Government’s Multicultural Framework Review. Together, our team put forward the following key recommendations: Recommendations to Overcome Challenges  1. Anti-Discrimination Legislation : Review and strengthen existing anti-discrimination laws to make them more comprehensive and effective . This should include provisions to tackle online hate speech and discrimination, as well as measures to combat the rise of white supremacy groups. 2. Media Accountability: Introduce regulations that require media outlets to adhere to guidelines promoting fair and balanced reporting on multicultural communities. 3. Economic Inclusion Programs: Implement targeted economic programs aimed at providing job opportunities and skills training for marginalised communities. 4. Cultural Diplomacy: Encourage cultural exchange programs and diplomacy efforts that focus on non-Western countries to break down barriers of insularity. 5. Reform Legal Frameworks: Review existing legal frameworks, such as immigration and law enforcement policies, to ensure they do not disproportionately affect certain communities. Multicultural Framework Review is a milestone report and the first major look at Australian multiculturalism in a generation. What does it mean? Titled "Towards Fairness - a multicultural Australia for all," this review provides a unified understanding of who Australians are today. It highlights many things including the role of art and culture in shaping a shared Australian identity. It’s a clear commitment to fostering cohesion and respect among diverse cultures and communities, honouring their lived experiences. CulturalPulse shared our thoughts among the 796 public submissions, and the key message being: It’s time to shift from the traditional "Build it and they will come" mentality to a "Go to where they belong" approach. This means acknowledging and respecting the unique values and preferences of Australian lived experiences. Finally the security and intelligence community are talking about national social cohesion and integration of migrants as a strategically crucial aspect of our national security environment. My work on the Polish intellectual origins of Australian multiculturalism, that I worked on over 10 years ago, seems more relevant than ever today. It’s interesting that Zubrzycki “the father of Australian multiculturalism”, before moving to Canberra, was also part of the British intelligence community SOE (Special Operations Executive). Canadian Multiculturalism Day (June 27) reminds us to celebrate the cultural diversity that makes our nation so special. It’s a reflection of our dedication to treating each other with equity, inclusivity, and mutual respect, which helps to create a strong and thriving Canadian society. #canadianmulticulturalismday

June 27th is Canadian Multiculturalism Day, a day to celebrate multiculturalism, one of the most unique and greatest policies in Canada. In 1988, the Canadian Government passed the Canadian Multiculturalism Act, making Canada the first country to recognize multiculturalism as an official policy. Today, the notion of multiculturalism serves as a guiding principle to build a nation where all citizens ensure all citizens, regardless of their background, have a fair chance to succeed. Yet, we are far from the ideal, we must work to live up to the aspirations of multiculturalism. In the recent publication of Indo-Caribbean World, our Chair, Ryan Singh, wrote about the utility of multiculturalism in Canada, and why this policy is needed more than before. Further, he discussed the importance of grassroots community activism that is required to fuel multiculturalism and ensure that the spirit of the policy isn't forgotten but strengthened. The work by the Indo-Caribbean Canadian Association aspires to be part of the fabric of a multicultural nation, where we can be proud and active citizens of Canada but also practice and celebrate our ancestorial culture and heritage.
