The study of habits has not received sufficient attention in the historical examination of Chinese medicine, largely due to a disproportionate focus on grand systems which links the human body with the myriad factors in its environment. Individuals typically only engage in a small portion of their behavioral repertoire at any given time, leading to the existence of only a fraction of potential habits. By exploring the history of habits, the study of Chinese medicine can become more attuned with human interests. Earlier this year, Jolien Hendrix and colleagues from Belgium (currently supported by ME Research UK, bit.ly/nijs004) published the results of a systematic review looking at adrenergic dysfunction in ME/CFS and fibromyalgia. The adrenergic system is part of the nervous system responsible for controlling arousal, attention, mood, learning, memory and the stress response. In this review, the researchers bring together evidence from 37 studies reporting adrenergic abnormalities in ME/CFS and fibromyalgia, including increased adrenaline levels, and an increased expression of adrenergic receptors at rest and after exercise. These findings support the involvement of adrenergic dysfunction in the pathophysiology of both conditions. Read more: bit.ly/3ZGjyi9

"The story of psychedelics in Australia isn't just about modern medical breakthroughs; it's about a rich, covert history where underground practitioners, researchers, and communities have kept the flame burning throughout decades of prohibition." The Hidden Roots of Australia's Psychedelic Underground Psychedelics Today recently published an article i wrote about the psychedelic underground in an Australian context. For 50 years psychedelic science went underground, with people skirting the edge of academia or the bleeding edge following a hunch, citizen scientists, and bibliophiles trying to better understand the social context of various entheogens. Psychedelic Science was largely a community of the multidisciplinary, of mycologists, botanists, chemists, and anthropologists sometimes underground, sometimes not. In recent times this sense of sharing knowlege found expression in events such as Entheobotanica, then through the Entheogenesis Australis symposiums that became central to Australia's psychedelic community, and in time Psychedelic Research in Science & Medicine. https://lnkd.in/gF2FAYha
