The Federal Government's initial response to the Strategic Review of the Australian Apprenticeships Incentive System recognises the importance of #apprentices, in particular for #SmallBusiness and in the critical housing sector, but it leaves open uncertainty about crucial #EmployerIncentives to hire young workers, Australian Industry Group (Ai Group) Chief Executive Innes Willox said today. "The Key Apprentices program seeks to encourage apprentices into trade occupations, particularly in construction to ease the housing crisis, and will hopefully encourage more young Australians to take up trade apprenticeships," Mr Willox said. "This is welcome. However, there is no clarity around continuing employer incentives which are due to expire on June 30. "Without continuing a broader system of incentives, it means there will be far fewer apprentices employed, simply because companies will no longer be supported to do so." Can't argue with where the government has placed its apprenticeships focus in the announcement about the growth and skills levy this afternoon. Flexibility - as long as quality is maintained - is welcome, as is the emphasis on opportunities for younger people. Think it's important not to throw the baby out with the bathwater on L7 apprenticeships; need to make sure those that already deliver on the Skills England-identified priority areas are still fundable and attractive to employers.
We've been listening carefully to the Prime Minister's conference speech this afternoon. With a clear focus on boosting opportunities for young people, Sir Keir Starmer and Education Secretary, Bridget Phillipson, announced a new growth and skills levy, focusing on: - The introduction of foundation apprenticeships, supporting younger people to earn a salary while developing skills - Allowing shorter duration apprenticeships for greater flexibility for employers - Giving Skills England time to identify other types of training funded by the levy, based on priority skills needs We'll keep an interested eye out for further detail in the coming weeks, particularly as to how quality, credibility and relevance will be maintained under the new system. It’s Social Mobility Day and it’s time to get something off my chest This post isn’t about me or my story - saving that for another time. Today I saw an apprenticeship advertised for £16,000 A ridiculous unliveable wage and inaccessible opportunity for many I commented and was told that minimum wage for under 19’s/first year apprentices is £6.40 Meaning the salary on offer was ‘above average’ and "this is just how apprenticeships are" That’s just over £13,000 a year?! How is this legally acceptable and what happened to morals? Just because something is a minimum legal requirement doesn’t make it right! I’m hearing lots of talk about a certain party creating more apprenticeships if they win the election But how many of those apprenticeships will be accessible or paid a liveable wage? And why are we fighting to create more apprenticeships when the ones we already have CLEARLY aren’t fair? I’m not an expert on this subject so if I’m missing something here please let me know! P.S this isn't an isolated incident, I'm seeing lots of roles like this pop up! #socialmobility #fairyjobmother #genz #genzatwork #apprenticeships

I’m a big fan of #apprenticeships. They can help employers struggling to fill skills gaps. Taking on apprentices is a cost-effective way to develop the new skills you need. With extra government funding now available an apprenticeship programme is a good way to build up your talent pool. If you work with training providers you can even develop industry leading skills. You can also recruit people with diverse backgrounds, provide #workplacetraining and improve staff retention. However, worryingly, six out of 10 businesses don’t currently employ apprentices. "Poor public transport connections make it harder to attract workers." The Government's new report, Skills England: driving growth and widening opportunities, says the UK needs skilled workers to build 1.5 million new homes, to make our country a clean energy superpower, and to ensure we have an NHS fit for the future. One of the ways we can increase skilled workers is through apprenticeships. But, as the cost of owning your own car increases, and public transport worsens, getting apprentices to work every day is harder and harder. Do you employ apprentices? What are your biggest challenges with finding, and retaining, apprentices? #Apprenticeships #SkillsEngland #WorkplaceTransport
