yet2 had a great time volunteering at More Than Words. We sorted through more than 1,400 books, working alongside the young adult coordinators who work at More Than Words “to take charge of their lives by taking charge of a business.” More Than Words works with some of the most vulnerable young adults in Greater Boston: those who are in the foster care system, court involved, homeless, or out of school. At More Than Words the young adults have a paying job that teaches them job skills, interpersonal skills, etc. while receiving focused support to ensure they persist in school and create plans for their future. #givingback #volunteering

Selecting valuable service projects is the hardest part about corporate volunteering. ❓ Is the cause legitimate? ❓️ How is it relevant to our audience? ❓️ How does it impact the community? Community engagement staff of all levels ask these questions everytime. Luckily, there are local resources that will help you, help others. United Way of Northeast Florida's ALICE Report provides insight on our most overlooked population. ALICE stands for: - Asset - Limited - Income - Constrained - Employed ALICE households: ⬆️ Float above the poverty line ⬇️ But fall below the basic cost of living For example, HALF of Jacksonville's Westside homes qualify as impoverished or ALICE. These households are more vulnerable in needs like: 🔷️ Food 🔷️ Housing 🔷️ Child Care 🔷️ Transportation My recent post about constructing Habijax homes was ALICE inspired. The photo opportunity below is the Addison, Texas, donating an incremental check from their nickel and dime recycling collection jar for $821.11 to Metrocrest Services, a nonprofit organization supporting low-income residents, those experiencing homelessness, and food insecurity in Addison, Texas, Carrollton, Texas, and Farmers Branch, Texas. The Town of Addison is deceptive but likes to project a veneer of care for public image and stakeholder purposes. Starting in the 2000s-2017 and continuing still today, the Town of Addison collaborated with its wealthy luxury high-rise development friends (UDR) to demolish and bulldoze its community of nine low-income apartment units, many on governmental assistance vouchers (disabled children and adults, disabled Veterans, people with debilitating severe ailments and those suffering from the effects of racial trauma) and displacing 2,500 poor citizens living in rental units off Brookhaven Club Drive. The mayor at the time, Joe Chow, claimed, "UDR is helping us to create a community that will not only be the envy of this region but of every city in America." The Town of Addison changed Brookhaven Club Drive to Vitruvian Way because they felt it sounded more elitist and better suited to the newly approved lucrative luxury community, and it made the billionaire developers happy. Recently, a Town of Addison council member taunted that the prior community of undesirables was "not one of Addison's marque parts of town" and needed leveling because it did not fit their brand. These low-income residents were hourly wage workers in restaurants, hotels, and shopping strip centers. #HousingOpportunityFund Rally Recap: Last Week, BiSHoP rallied with SF Community Organizers in support of subsidies that address the hardships of extremely low-income (ELI) seniors, working families, and disabled individuals. The fund would provide rental subsidies to bridge the gap between very low-income and ELI rent levels. For less than 1% of San Francisco's budget, this subsidy would make 700+ units affordable to ELI households by 2026, and 2,800+ households by 2031. Thank you to our fellow city organizers who joined us in this rally, including Senior and Disability Action, Self-Help for the Elderly, Chinatown Community Development Center, Young Community Developers, and Mission Economic Development Agency.
