The Bowery Mission reposted this
Often when people find out I work at The Bowery Mission, they ask me how to respond when people approach them on the street to ask for help. And while every situation is unique, my first piece of advice is this: Start by sharing your name and asking theirs. A name conveys dignity and value and reminds us that each person is created in God’s image. Unfortunately, many people living on the streets have grown accustomed to being ignored, looked down on or treated with disrespect. If the person is open to conversation, ask unintrusive questions, show interest, listen and learn something new. Let them know that they can always find help at The Bowery Mission—3 meals a day, safe shelter, and a warm welcome. These sorts of simple conversations have led so many people to our doors and to the help they needed. I hope this post helps you feel more confident and equipped the next time God places someone—with a name—in your path.
