Unfortunately, we see this almost every week Live Your Best Life Disability Support Services..Our kids are constantly suspended because of behaviours related to their disabilities, and parents are scrambling without enough NDIS support. We have parents working from their cars outside schools parents forced to change jobs or even unable to work and living off their carer's pension ( which is disgraceful may i add) because their children are suspended so frequently. And these children are at DISABILITY SCHOOLS. Where are these kids supposed to go? While I understand the pressure on teachers to manage their classrooms, pushing our kids out isn't the solution. This system is pushing families to the brink, but its not teachers' fault; they're stretched thin without proper support. I can't tell you how many calls we get from families in crisis, it is absolutely heartbreaking. This blame game between education and NDIS isn't solving anything. We need real change. Our education system must do better to support these families. Children with disabilities have the same education!!!
Last night, A Current Affair shared the story of Mackenzie, an #autistic girl living in the Hunter Valley region who has been suspended from school ten times since August 2023. Our Founding CEO and Director Nicole Rogerson also featured in the program, explaining how results from our recent National #Autism and Education Survey demonstrate systemic failures nationwide to support students on the #autismspectrum: ''[This experience] can have a lifetime of damage to this little girl's #mentalhealth. Let's make no bones about it," Rogerson said. "#Autisticadults tell us all the time that for them their school years were harrowing. This problem isn't going away and it's something that #education departments need to step up to and rise to the challenge."

This is so sad and unfortunately not at all uncommon. I have worked with far too many children who have been suspended and even expelled from school because they find it difficult to regulate their emotions. School is a highly complex environment for all children. Those who have sensory sensitivities and use incredible amounts of energy trying to navigate social situations and grey areas in rules and expectations are completely overwhelmed and exhausted. Instead of responding with compassion, schools all too often respond with rejection. This only exacerbates the problem as children are made to feel shame and guilt for a response completely out of their control. It's not the fault of the teachers or schools, they themselves are overwhelmed and under-resourced. There's a big black hole of resource, training, and finance for schools in providing inclusive education to children with neurodiversity, mental health concerns, and developmental trauma.

Today I was introduced to Autism Level UP! resources and tool kits. There are lots of FREE tools on the website for schools to use to support in helping young people to regulate their emotions. I really like how many can be personalised to the individual user such as the energy scaling. My favourite find was The Masking Regulator which considers how much energy it takes to navigate masking in different situations and awareness of what being your authentic self involves. Thank you to the team behind these awesome resources. #AutismLevelUp #EmotionalRegulation #EnergyRegulation #autism #education #neurodiversity

Kids having more free time in the summer creates so much space for fun, engaging activities. But the reality is that it also makes screen time more accessible and tempting. While screen time for children certainly has it's place, it's easy to accidentally allow it to become excessive - and even more so for children on the spectrum. Check out this blog post for tips on how to better manage screen time for your child(ren) for the remainder of their summer break > https://lnkd.in/exqTE6Ei #managingscreentime #autismresources #autismparent #autismmom #autismdad #summerbreak #childwithautism
