About two weeks ago, I was invited to a high-level roundtable event titled '#Emerging Opportunities for Trade and Investment in Africa’s Automotive Industry organized by #The Ghana JET Programme.   The #Ghana #Automotive Development Policy (GADP) launched in 2019 aims to position Ghana as the Automotive hub in the West African sub-region. This initiative has attracted leading local and global car #Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) to establish assembly plants in Ghana. The policy leverages #Ghana's skilled workforce, #tax incentives, and the growing demand for #reliable new vehicles in the #West African region. This is part of the initiative to position Africa as the last frontier of the automotive industry and in West Africa, Ghana is aggressively embarking on the implementation of strategic policies and initiatives.   In addition to the GADP, the Ghanaian government launched the #National Electric Vehicle Policy in December 2023 during COP28 DUBAI, UAE. This policy aims to provide market signals and support the decarbonization of the transport sector, aligning with Ghana’s National #Energy Transition Plan 2022-2070.   The Ghana JET Programme, as part of the Ghana Automotive Investor Mission, organized a high-level roundtable titled 'Emerging Opportunities for Trade and Investment in Africa’s Automotive Industry.' The objectives of this roundtable included: #Assessing the current state of Ghana and Africa's automotive industry, including key players in the market, international corporations, and government policies. #Exploring market opportunities and challenges, such as infrastructure development, skill gaps, and regulatory hurdles. #Examining trends in trade and investment in Ghana and Africa's automotive sector, considering the impact of global trade dynamics on the automotive trade environment. #Discuss strategies to encourage local manufacturing and increase value addition within the automotive sector. #Encouraging collaboration between Ghana and other African nations in the automotive sector under the AfCFTA (African Continental Free Trade Area) framework. This roundtable aimed to facilitate dialogue among stakeholders to identify opportunities, address challenges and develop strategies for the sustainable growth of the automotive industry in Ghana. Oxford Business Group revealed in a new report that Morocco is a regional and international leader in establishing new special economic zones (SEZs) and attracting foreign direct investment (FDI), thanks to its higher value-added technology industries. Entitled “How Special Economic Zones are Shaping Africa's Industrial Landscape”, the report states that between 2010 and 2016, Morocco's exports increased by $ 2 billion, with automotive exports rising from 2% to 16% of the total.  “Between 2008 and 2015 the share of medium- to high-tech exports increased from 23% to over 40%,” explained the report.  Noting that Morocco has focused over the past decade on high-tech activities such as automobiles, Oxford Business Group stressed that the Moroccan government has played a key role in attracting industrial investment, with the launch of the National Pact for Industrial Emergence (PNEI) in 2008 and the Industrial Acceleration Plan (PAI) in 2014, in addition to providing a range of tax incentives for investors.
