Rare-earth magnets have been a key component in most electric vehicle (EV) motors to date, but their supply chain is vulnerable and environmentally costly. ZF Friedrichshafen AG, a major automotive supplier, has announced a breakthrough in sustainable transportation with their 220-kilowatt traction motor for EVs that does not use rare-earth permanent magnets. The new motor, called the I2SM, matches the power and performance of rare-earth-based motors currently used in EVs. This marks a significant step forward for automakers to reduce their reliance on rare-earth materials and move towards more sustainable electric powertrains. Eliminating rare-earth magnets in EV motors is crucial to making electric transportation truly environmentally friendly. Tula Technology, another company working on rare-earth-free motor designs, has emphasized the importance of this innovation for achieving net-zero emissions goals. As the EV market continues to grow, solutions like ZF's I2SM could help free the industry from rare-earth supply chain constraints.
