The aging of people with HIV. Close to 400 000 people with HIV in the US are over age 55 years and at risk for age-associated dementias (AAD). Study with simulated cohorts estimates that 22.1% and 16.3% of 60-year-old male and female individuals, respectively, with HIV would develop AAD by 80 years compared with 15.9% and 13.3% of male individuals/female individuals in the general population. How can we inform and help health/supportive systems to plan for these upcoming changes? Research by Dr. Chris Owens found male providers in the western U.S. who knew PrEP prescribing guidelines were more likely to prescribe this HIV prevention method. “Most PrEP research focuses on providers’ intentions to prescribe while we looked at the determinants of prior prescribing PrEP, finding two main points. First, knowledge is important in better understanding providers’ behaviors in delivering this HIV preventive evidence-based practice. Also, structural factors like laws and access to care—that vary widely between states and regions—might be important in mediating or moderating providers’ prescription habits,” Owens said. https://lnkd.in/gGskvRsc #TAMUHealth #TIPH #ASPPH #TIPH #PublicHealth #12thForHealth #Prep #HIVprevention #12thForHealth

New journal article! Drug use, mental distress, and other psychosocial factors threaten HIV care for youth living with HIV (YLWH). We aimed to identify #syndemic psychosocial patterns among YLWH and examine how such patterns shape #HIV outcomes. Using baseline data from 208 YLWH enrolled in an HIV treatment adherence intervention, we performed latent class analysis on dichotomized responses to 9 psychosocial indicators (enacted HIV #stigma; clinical #depression and #anxiety; alcohol, marijuana, and illicit drug misuse; food and housing insecurity; legal history). https://buff.ly/3WqjPnD #HIVresearch #HIVstigma #substanceuse #mentalhealth #research #syndemic #PLWH

Uptake of HIV Prevention Medication Doubles with mix of Digital Health Interventions, study finds: 💊A UCLA Health-led study significantly increased the use of PrEP, an HIV prevention medication, among younger, at-risk Americans through a combination of digital health interventions 💊The study utilized one-on-one telehealth coaching, peer support forums, and automated text messages, more than doubling PrEP usage in this demographic, which has historically low medication uptake 💊Published in The Lancet Digital Health, the study was a randomized controlled trial aiming to improve HIV prevention behaviors among Americans with the lowest rates of PrEP use 💊PrEP, approved by the FDA in 2012, is highly effective in preventing HIV infection when taken as prescribed, yet its uptake among Americans ages 16–24 and in minority groups has been notably low 💊The research identified multiple barriers to PrEP usage, including medical mistrust, affordability, and access issues, leading to the development of targeted interventions 💊The study spanned two years and included nearly 900 participants from diverse backgrounds, demonstrating a sustained increase in PrEP uptake among those receiving the full range of digital interventions 👇Links to articles and study in comments #DigitalHealth #HIV
