Are Shared Shipping Services A Partner Or A Parasite? Walmart renegotiated their shipping rates with FedEx. This applies to third party sellers using the "Ship with Walmart" program. Size and weight still matter, and discounts only apply to Ground and Ground Economy. What Walmart did is nothing new. There are a lot of these services. And I mean, A LOT. SWW (Walmart), Auctane (multiple), Shippo, Easy Post, Pirate Ship, Veeqo (Amazon) to name a few. Every wonder why these companies want to negotiate for you? Here's Amazon's answer: "Veeqo is free because we financially benefit from shipping volume passed to our partner shipping carriers." ELI5: They pay less than they charge you and keep the difference (or charge you a fee for the privilege) Why should you care? 1) Leveraging these discounts means you use their shipping account. The terms negotiated were chosen to cast a wide net. This means that the puts and takes of the deal may not align well to your business. 2) Your volume makes the platform more money. The more consolidated volume they negotiate with, the sharper the discount they chase. While some savings make it back to you, the goal of the platform is always to improve their position. 3) Honeypot offers can get you stuck. These services draw you in and make it hard to leave the platform. The goal is to get your business entrenched with theirs. If stuck, you may have to buy more services or accept unexpected fee increases. I ALWAYS recommend setting up your own accounts with couriers.
