𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐞 𝐄𝐭𝐨𝐧? The north-south divide is at an all time high, with the government recently listing 55 'coldspots' for education, with many of these being in the north of the country. Dudley, Middlesborough, and Oldham were among 3 of these 'coldspots' with the weakest education outcomes, meaning students were leaving with lower prospects than the rest of the country. However, the DfE recently approved plans with Eton College and Star Academies for a partnership of 3 sixth forms to be built in these towns to increase the engagement with education in these areas. Eton will fund £1 million a year per college on top of current funding levels, with the aim of helping students from deprived backgrounds in the north secure places at top universities. It's great to see Eton recognise their own privilege and the north-south divide to help children from deprived areas receive extra funding. Is this just a PR stunt for Eton or a step in the right direction?

We're just getting ready for our panel on how we can level up education, at Conservative Party Conference #CPC23 It is places, and not people, which have been de-skilled. So if levelling up is a meaningful long-term project, decision makers must rethink the approach to education in areas which have been 'left behind' by decades of decline. Can a new place-focussed education strategy match skills with jobs to create a high-skilled and high-wage local economy? Panellists: - Anne Longfield CBE, Former Children's Commissioner, currenlty chair of The Commission on Young Lives Lives (Chair) - Andy Burnham, Mayor of Greater Manchester - Dr Eric Lybeck, Senior Lecturer, The University of Manchester - Mary Robinson, MP for Cheadle and member of the Levelling Up, Housing and Communities Committee - Matt Leach, Chief Executive, Local Trust If you're not able to join us in Friends Meeting House, you can follow along as we live tweet the event over on X, formerly Twitter. https://lnkd.in/emx3SPv8
