Today marks International Overdose Awareness Day – the world’s largest annual campaign to help end overdose, remember loved ones lost and acknowledge the grief families and friends face in the wake of the crisis. In the past year alone, there were at least 7,328 suspected opioid overdose deaths across Canada. That’s an average of 20 deaths per day, up from 10 in 2019, signalling a worsening crisis with no signs of slowing down. Unity Health’s harm reduction resources, clinical programs and world-class research are helping to address the challenges of the crisis and are meeting a huge need in the community. The Department of Health and Human Services announced the 2024 State Opioid Response (SOR) and Tribal Opioid Response (TOR) Notices of Funding Opportunity, providing up to $1.48 billion to states, territories, and the District of Columbia and $63 million to Tribes to address the current overdose crisis. “These grants enable states, territories, and Tribal entities to fund programs that support the continuum of prevention, harm reduction, treatment, and recovery for millions of people. So very sad and wasteful. We can win World Wars, but we are powerless to win the war against drugs. Nothing seems to work - punitive punishments, accommodative policies, rehab institutions…they have all failed as more people succumb and die. The only solution lies in happy families…at least there is hope for recovery when individuals succumb to drugs, as families support their recovery. Happy & Healthy Families is the only solution towards winning this war. Govts, societies and communities need to do their most to create environments that generate Happy Families. https://lnkd.in/g97h9YtT

Our in-house psychiatrist, colleague and long-time friend of Paracelsus Recovery recently spoke to Tobias Marti and Giorgio Scherrer of Neue Zürcher Zeitung about his work for non-profit harm reduction organisations in Zurich. Dr. Thilo Beck is a pioneer in Zurich's drug policy and emphasises the urgent need for protected spaces where marginalised individuals can safely consume substances. Beck advocates for a controlled, limited legalisation approach to drug consumption in specialised locations, stressing that repressive measures only exacerbate the risks. At Paracelsus Recovery, we adopt a harm-reductionist approach to substance abuse and believe Thilo's points could not be more critical. First responders are in need of tools to save lives, especially in light of the current opioid overdose crisis. Shockingly, an average of 14 Pennsylvanians die every day from an overdose. In 2022, synthetic opioids were linked to approximately 90 percent of the country's opioid overdose deaths, which totaled around 72,000. It's clear that immediate action is needed to equip our first responders with the resources and support they need to combat this crisis. #policechief #lawenforcement #police #leadershipmatters #publicpolicy #PCPA
