The one thing that will scale the use of Electric Vehicles in Africa is a deliberate role out of charging stations in strategic areas. Today afternoon I saw one of the early steps taken towards this at a TotalEnergies petrol station in a Nairobi suburb. Or is it Kiambu? 😅 I get confused sometimes! Step in Ampersand E-Mobility. The company claims to be Africa’s first electric transport energy company with the longest track record of serving a commercial e-motorcycle fleet and battery swapping network at scale. It is creating a world where motorcycle transport is cleaner and more profitable for its consumers than ever before. Nigeria’s electric vehicle (EV) market is on the rise, projected to grow at an impressive annual growth rate of 58% from 2024 to 2030! 🚗💨 With initiatives like the West African E-Mobility Conference and the launch of the EV association lead by our partner Clean Tech Hub Nigeria, the country is taking major strides toward reducing its dependence on fossil fuels in the transport sector. 🚌 The BasiGo – Practical Action partnership brings an innovative financing approach to Kenya to help public bus operators transition to e-buses. The solution includes a Pay-As-You-Drive subscription model that lowers the high upfront costs of ownership. BasiGo will align all its operations from e-bus material supply chains to labor conditions to emissions standards to comply with international standards and local regulations. This will allow it to attract more investment to deploy 1,000 e-buses to cities in Kenya and sub-Saharan Africa.
