On the long list of things parents need to teach their kids in childhood is proper flossing, but plenty of adults don't know the best techniques themselves! We're here to help. 👍 Daily flossing should be a priority for anyone with two teeth that touch each other because brushing alone cannot remove the plaque and food debris in those spaces. The longer it remains and builds up, the more it contributes to gum disease, cavities, and worse. Parents should floss their child's teeth for them until they have the dexterity to do it themselves. Make it part of the daily routine. 🔄 Explain that flossing matters for keeping their smile healthy, and flossing is something big kids do like tying their shoes. Floss picks can also make the process easier instead of using string floss. Good flossing technique starts with pulling out about a foot and a half of floss and wrapping it loosely around the middle fingers, with an inch or two left in the middle to slip between the teeth. Don't just snap the floss down onto the gums, curve it around each tooth in a C-shape and gently work down. 🦷 Then rotate the floss along so that it's always clean floss being used for each new gap. Dirty floss won't clean teeth! #flossing #FlossingTechnique #CleanTeeth #dentist #dentalcare #avrildsouzadmd #cosmeticdentist #ortho #orthodontist #pediatricdentist #ny #nydentist #schenectady #schenectadydentist

We hear a lot of the same questions from patients and parents of patients, so let's wrap up the year by answering three of them. #1: My tooth doesn't hurt, so why do I need a filling? 🤔 Cavities aren't always painful. They form when tooth enamel is eroded away until a hole forms. As the hole gets deeper, it can reach the dentin and even the pulp chamber at the center of the tooth, but in the early stages, they usually don't hurt. While the best option is preventing a cavity from forming at all, it's much better to treat a cavity before it hurts than allow it to reach that point. By then, a filling alone might not be enough! #2: How important is it to keep baby teeth healthy? 🦷 Just because baby teeth are temporary, that doesn't mean they don't serve an important purpose. Kids need them to speak clearly, chew effectively, and master the lifelong brushing and flossing habits that will protect their adult teeth. They also hold the places for those adult teeth. #3: Should I be worried about the effect of pacifiers and thumbsucking on my child's teeth? 👍 Pacifier use and thumbsucking can indeed contribute to significant problems, but not when the child is very young. Babies and toddlers often find these habits very comforting, and they usually grow out of them on their own. If they're showing no signs of stopping by age three, parents should consider strategies for discouraging the habit, like clipping the pacifier. We can help find the right solution. #DentalFAQs #fillings #BabyTeeth #pacifiers #thumbsucking #dentist #dentalcare #avrildsouzadmd #cosmeticdentist #ortho #orthodontist #pediatricdentist #ny #nydentist #schenectady #schenectadydentist

40% of kids will have at least one cavity by the time they start school, usually due to poor oral hygiene and eating and drinking lots of sugary things. It's critical to teach kids good oral health habits early on and to help them brush their teeth until they are able to do it themselves, but it can still be tricky for them to clean out the crevices in their molars. 🦷 That's where sealants come in. Dental sealants are a layer of clear plastic that we brush onto the chewing surfaces of teeth to keep cavity-causing plaque and bacteria out. Sealants reduce childhood tooth decay in the back teeth by as much as 80%, which is why they've been such a popular treatment since the 1960s. The application process is quick, painless, and easy and can be done within a regular appointment. 😊 We recommend that kids get sealants as soon as their first adult molars erupt, which is usually around age 6. The earlier, the better, but sealants aren't only for young children; older kids, teens, and adults can get them too! 👍 #DentalSealants #sealants #ToothDecay #cavity #dentist #dentalcare #avrildsouzadmd #cosmeticdentist #ortho #orthodontist #pediatricdentist #ny #nydentist #schenectady #schenectadydentist

Common questions parents ask: Why are my child's new front teeth so yellow? 🦷 We often get this question from parents wondering if there is something wrong with their kid's newly-erupted front teeth because they look more yellow than their baby teeth. It is actually totally normal for permanent teeth to sometimes looks darker than their baby counterpart. But why? The dentin composition of a permanent tooth is thicker/different than a baby tooth, which makes them looks slightly darker. Also, by having the cream-coloured tooth next to a milk-white baby tooth, the creamy white colour appears more yellow as well. With time, when all of the permanent teeth are erupted, the colour will appear more uniform and less yellow by comparison. Therefore, we DO NOT recommend bleaching any teeth until we have all the permanent teeth in the mouth. And, by then, the appearance is much nicer and bleaching will no longer be necessary. 😁 #ChildrensDentalWorldWinnipeg #ChildrensDentistry #PediatricDentistry

Let’s go back to the basics! As we step into the new year, let's make a resolution together: prioritize our kids' dental health! January marks the perfect time to revisit the fundamentals of oral care. Did you know that it's recommended to assist in brushing your child's teeth until they reach the age of 9? Yes, that’s right – 9 years old! The truth is, until the age of 9, kids may not have the dexterity to thoroughly clean their teeth. So, let's continue to lend a helping hand and ensure those pearly whites stay healthy and strong. Here's a quick refresher on the essentials: 🦷 Brushing Techniques: Use a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste and gently brush in small, circular motions. 🦷 Frequency: Brush at least twice a day, especially after meals and before bedtime. 🦷 Supervision: Stay involved and oversee brushing sessions until your child can effectively brush on their own. 🦷 Flossing Matters: As soon as teeth start touching, introduce flossing to remove plaque and prevent cavities between teeth. 🦷 Visit the dentist regularly! Regular exams, starting at 1 year of age or within 6 months of the first tooth emerging, will give your child the best opportunity to have a healthy mouth for their lifetime. Remember, good habits established early on pave the way for a lifetime of healthy smiles! #pediatricdentistry #pediatricdentist #parenting #dentist #oralhealth

Treatment of Milk teeth / primary teeth / deciduous teeth / baby teeth is very much important for the overall development of your kid. Milk teeth has to be maintained till the permanent teeth are ready to erupt. Premature removal of Milk teeth may lead to closure of space for the erupting permanent teeth leading to problems with teeth alignment and jaw growth. #milkteeth, #mythsvsfacts , #pediatricdentistry , #rootcanaltreatment

What can you do to prevent abfraction lesions? 🦷 One of the best things you can do is to straighten and balance your bite. This is because our teeth are supposed to be harmoniously linked together. Unfortunately, many of us are born with our teeth not perfectly aligned, which can lead to inefficient biting and damage to our teeth and bones. If you have any concerns about abfraction lesions, be sure to with us. We will help you develop a plan to prevent further damage and protect your teeth. #porcelainveneers #dentalveneers #cosmeticdentist #smilemakeovers #cosmeticdentistry #londonontario #londonontariodentist

What do you tell your patients on denture delivery day? There are many important post insertion instructions that you will want to review with your patients. However, these are the two which often bring some laughter. I have many “funny” stories of times when they were not followed. - Please strongly advise your patients NEVER to wrap their teeth in a napkin and place them beside their plate at mealtime. Crumbled napkins left on a table after a meal are easily mistaken for trash. Their new denture may meet an untimely end. (I have heard many versions of this story from patients over the years.) - Please even more strongly advise your patients to avoid leaving their new teeth within the reach of a pet, especially a dog. For some reason, pets love their owners’ false teeth and WILL chew them, often into many many pieces. (I also have numerous pet stories, all of which ended badly for the denture. 😊) These two hints may sound humorous (and sometimes the stories were funny) but having another set of dentures made is both time consuming and expensive. Your patients will thank you for your concern and their dentures will be safe from harm. Enjoy your weekend.
