Passionate about getting resources and support for those with the vision to achieve the sustainable impact our world needs.
The power within and the need to change our systems. I hope to hear more from the ground-breaking Grameen Foundation in Oxford this week. I can’t stop thinking about this statistic: 💫 There's about 1 billion USD worth of cash sitting in small boxes across the continent of Africa: women self-organise and save in groups; they loan each other money on the basis of trust; Grameen Foundation have devised a way to digitally record these transactions to create quasi credit scores. #shiftthepower #partnershipforthegoals

"We need to get over the notion that we're going to empower women. If people are living in poverty, it is because of us; we have created these systems. Let us revisit the language. Women have all the power they need within them: they don't need handouts; they need opportunities, champions, and people who invest in them. Let us stop fixing the woman, and start fixing everything around her." (Zubaida Bai at The Conduit today) A little close to two years since John Woolsey and I got to intern with CARE Social Ventures through Career Development - Saïd Business School's Project Aspire (thank you, Dan Kiernan and Tara Sabre Collier!), so great to meet Zubaida in person, get to hear from her on her remarkable journey and insights, and unapologetically fangirl as always 💛 Two fun facts (among many other truth bombs she dropped on us today!) 💫 Zubaida's innovation, the Janma clean birth kit, is showcased in three museums around the world, including the Victoria and Albert Museum (no surprises, obviously; I just didn't know this before, I should've!) 💫 There's about 1 billion USD worth of cash sitting in small boxes across the continent of Africa: women self-organise and save in groups; they loan each other money on the basis of trust; Grameen Foundation have devised a way to digitally record these transactions to create quasi credit scores. So, well, here's to getting over the notion that we are going to empower women, and #InvestInHerPower instead, like the Grameen Foundation folks say (and do!). Thank you, Zubaida for being you, doing the work you do, and saying the things you say! And thank you, Conduit and Melanie Jamieson for hosting!

From 14% to 20% in just a few years – that's the fantastic growth in women-owned businesses in India. As a fellow woman entrepreneur, let me tell you – this shift isn't happening by chance. It's the result of recognizing women's economic potential. Plus, major props to the government for getting on board and actively supporting our entrepreneurial journeys. The Budget 2024 is a game changer as it has covered funding, mentorship, and a tailored ecosystem for women-led businesses. Here's a breakdown for you: - Over 30 crore loans through Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana, with 70% benefiting women entrepreneurs, making substantial contributions to the economy. - Stand-Up India now provides loans ranging from ₹10 lakh to ₹1 crore for women entrepreneurs, coupled with ongoing support for various schemes, ensuring access to capital and mentorship. - Emphasis on skilling young women, closing talent gaps, and promoting technology adoption within women-led businesses. - Expanded networking and mentorship programs, along with encouragement for women-led incubators and accelerators, foster a collaborative environment. - Empowering women entrepreneurs not only drives business but also contributes to GDP, job creation, and overall economic growth, fostering social progress and gender equality. Kiva’s current goal is to reach 8 million underbanked women by 2028. Underbanked adults often share several intersectional characteristics: they are usually poor, young, lack access to education opportunities, are inexperienced in finance, and lack a mobile phone or internet access. These combined factors create additional barriers that make it more difficult to start businesses or support their families, reports Kiva CEO Vishal Ghotge in the Rooted in Impact blog. For women, additional factors such as gender-based biases, restrictive social expectations, and legal discrimination have all contributed to women being 20% less likely than men to hold an account with a financial institution. At Friendship Bridge we are proud to partner with Kiva since 2007, and share their belief that “when women participate in the economy, communities across the world grow and thrive.” Learn more: https://loom.ly/pfowVtA

Compliance Expert | Entrepreneur | Pharma | Asian Woman of Achievement Finalist | Angel Investor (HERmesa, AVA)
✨Asian Women of Achievement Awards, 2024 Finalist (Entrepreneur)✨ An amazing recognition and another step towards all Asian #femaleentrepreneurs realising their hopes and dreams. 💷 Up to £250B of new value could be added to the UK economy if #femalefounders scaled at the same rate as male-led businesses. Yet, women from #ethnicminorities have a hard time accessing funding & the stats are depressing: 🙋🏽♀️Only 9% of funding applications to NatWest Business are from women 🏋🏽♀️Only 2% raised in funding, goes to #femalebusinesses 🪽Only 14% of UK #angelinvestors are women 👯♀️Only 7% of UK angel investments were made to all-female teams 📣 Advice from the last Business & Parliament Forum discussing latest findings from the Enterprise Research Centre (UK), The Gender Index and mnAi - WE NEED TO BE MORE VISIBLE (and that includes self promotion). So, a big thanks to Women of the Future giving women a platform to empower, inspire and educate others. ✨ Thanks also to Pinky Lilani CBE DL & Julie Baker for making it happen, and congrats to the other finalists. Knowledge of financial services (savings, credit, investment, insurance, payment, etc.) makes your financial health sustainable.
Unbanked women often avoid accessing and using any financial products due to their lack of knowledge. SATHI Network's agents visit door-to-door and call for meetings at the local Union Councils which can be easily visited by underserved local women. With the support of a2i and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, our SATHI Network aims to reach the unreachable and include all in the financial ecosystem. #financialinclusion #womenempowerment #SATHINetwork #womenentrepreneurs

As usual, women-led organizations are undervalued. Per a recent article in the WSJ, “NCAA Women Beat Men in Finals’ Ratings for First Time—but Got 99% Less TV Money” When will funders and decision makers catch on that they are missing out on excellent products, offerings, and innovations across sectors. At the very least, capitalize on a value when you see one. #investinwomen #fundwomen #titlenine

Happy International Women's Day! Today, as we celebrate the remarkable achievements and contributions of women around the country, let's remember that every day is an opportunity to honour and uplift the incredible women in our lives and communities. One day simply isn't enough to recognize the countless contributions, resilience, and achievements of women in our country and the sector. Within initiatives like the Rebuild India Fund, this recognition takes tangible form. Our partners are at the forefront of driving positive change, particularly for women from marginalized communities. With a Gender, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (GEDI) lens, we ensure that every partner we engage with is committed to uplifting women and addressing gender-based challenges. A substantial portion—55%—of the initiatives supported by the Rebuild India Fund are specifically geared towards tackling gender-related issues and combating violence against women. Moreover, 53% of these initiatives are led by inspiring women leaders who demonstrate resilience and determination in their communities. A significant pillar of support for Rebuild India Fund has been individuals like Maya Patel and Sonal Sachdev Patel, whose exemplary leadership and trust-based philanthropy have paved the way for initiatives like Rebuild India Fund Investing in women isn't just a moral obligation; it's an economic necessity and a catalyst for sustainable development. Empowered women drive innovation and propel societies towards progress and prosperity. On this Women's Day, I urge #philanthropists, #corporates and #funders to stand with us in our commitment to supporting initiatives that support women proximate leaders and foster their leadership. Let's unite to drive progress, break down barriers, and build a future where every woman and girl can thrive and reach their full potential #InvestInWomen #InternationalWomensDay Tarsadia Foundation | GMSP Foundation

Male allies are so important if we want move the dial on investment into women led businesses. Yesterday was the launch of our first regional growth board in Newcastle as part of The Lifted Project an output from the Women Led High Growth Enterprise Government Taskforce chaired by Anne Boden . It is wonderful to see our data led initiative to get more investment and support for women led businesses into the regions of the UK take off. Ammar Mirza CBE was one of a few male allies in the room yesterday and his post about the event covers the tone and purpose of the community perfectly. He also took the most pictures. Thank you 🙏🏽 Amazing work facilitating a discussion with female founders, investors, universities and advisors Debra Leeves and Fozia Saleem - our chair and vice chair of the Newcastle growth board. What a fantastic room and dynamic conversation. Great to see fellow taskforce member Judith Hartley supporting the event and a huge thank you to Jordan Dargue and Helen Oldham for bringing the project and event to life. Thanks RBC Brewin Dolphin for hosting us. This is just the start and the energy was palpable. We need everyone’s support in the cities to realise our ambition to get capital and support flowing into women led businesses. The numbers don’t lie..women led businesses with 40% less capital create 20% more revenue than male led businesses. It makes economic sense. #womenled #femalefounders #investment #venturecapital #angelinvestment
Behind every great women, is another great women......... and some men 😁 What an afternoon 🎉 Bloody Brilliant. Congratulations to Jordan Dargue Helen Oldham Zandra Moore Debra Leeves Fozia Saleem Judith Hartley of the launch of The Lifted Project. A room filled with female leaders all committed to support one another helping realise their ambitions and raise their aspirations. Loved the community aspect and feeling of real empowerment. Given that "female entrepreneurs bring better returns, grow better and more diverse businesses, together with showing real commitment and balance to scale", why wouldn't you want to invest. Well done to Chris Black Tom Solly and team RBC Brewin Dolphin. Fabulous hearing from the whole room on what we can do to support more female entrepreneurs and ensure investment is attracted to, and remains within, our region across #Teesvalley and #NorthEast. The most successful sector for female founders and leaders is Health and Lifesciences, leading the way and attracting 30% more females. A sector I am proud to have been championing for over 5 years now. 💡 In fact I am immensely gratified to see sooooo many females succeed, standing up and standing out. 🤩 Having been surrounded by the most inspirational females throughout my life and being fortunate to have the greatest mother and wife, I am delighted at seeing the tides change. Positively. The key is allyship and ensuring that we raise the tide for all. Something that Simone Roche MBE and the Northern Power Women Awards have done very well making sure men are part of the solution. 👏 Shared learning and education to help us all understand, is critical to long lasting impact. Something that the team at The Lifted Project are committed too. Amazing to see so many successful female entrepreneurs we have across our region and those leading organisations too. Nicki Clark OBE Lisa Eaton FCIM Dr Natalia Blagburn Alice Rowen Hall Jeni Smith Jaclyn Wright Reshma Begum Joanne Lant Wenyan Sharp to name a few, lovely to see you all there today. #Liftedproject is an exemplar for the #inclusionbydefault project which helps aim to make the North East the most inclusive region in the UK by the end of 2025. Looking forward to platforming all of these wonder women and helping deliver inclusion by default.
